FULL TIME FROM THE GALPHARM STADIUM
    HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 1 (Taylor-Fletcher 55)

    BARNSLEY 0

SOMETIMES being the better team does not win football matches.

Barnsley were better than Huddersfield for 90 minutes at the Galpharm Stadium but failed to turn their total superiority into the goal that would have snatched a thoroughly deserved point.

Reds boss Andy Ritchie had the rare luxury of naming the same starting eleven for two successive matches as he sent out the side that drew with Bournemouth into action against the Terriers.

Barnsley should have been in front as early as the fifth minute when Paul Hayes, who terrorised the Terriers throughout the opening 45 minutes, broke from the half way line. The striker ran fully 40 yards before playing Chris Shuker clean through but his shot was hacked away from on the goalline by David Mirfin.

Hayes almost got his name on the scoresheet just two minutes later when he got his head onto Paul Heckinbottom's cross but Phil Senior managed to turn the ball away for a corner.

Heckingbottom again turned the ball in from the left on 17 minutes for Marc Richards but this time the striker could only head at Senior under pressure.

Huddersfield were ragged although veteran Andy Booth managed to get his head onto Chris Brandon's cross but Nick Colgan was in the right place to turn his effort away.

Barnsley had a clear penalty claim waved away on 22 minutes as Richards turned through onto Hayes' fine pass only to be tripped from behind by Nathan Clarke. Amazingly the referee gave nothing and booked Richards for his protests.

The referee again angered the 3,500 travelling faithful just three minutes later after showing a yellow card to Brian Howard despite the midfielder being clattered in an aerial battle with Mirfin.

Barnsley got in again on 35 minutes as Neil Austin picked out the acres of space behind the Terriers defence and Martin Devaney ran through before seeing his effortr deflect away for a corner.

Again the Reds ought to have broken the deadlock on 43 minutes as Richards nodded Paul Reid's fine cross back into the danger area but Hayes could not get his volley on target from six yards out.

Huddersfield finally threatened deep in stoppage time as Danny Schofield fired straight at Colgan from distance.

Barnsley were on top again right from the first kick in the second half as Richards fired inches wide of the target.

Huddersfield rocked the Reds with a smash and grab raid on 55 minutes as Holdsworth's cross ended up in the back of the net after a collision between Colgan and Taylor Fletcher which saw the ball bounce through into an empty goal.

Barnsley were undeterred and pressed on. Shuker thought he had equalised on 58 minutes as his fantastic dipping volley struck the underside of the bar before bouncing to Richards, who was flagged offside.

Richards should have levelled on 66 minutes as he found himself with an open goal to aim at from six yards as Hayes cross dissected the Terriers defence but the striker shot horribly wide of the target.

Although Schofield fired wide on 68 minutes, the pressure was all with Barnsley and Hayes volleyed wide of the target seven minutes later after Senior had failed to deal with Howard's corner kick.

Hayes again shot over on 76 minutes after Richards had powered through the Huddersfield defence yet again.

However, any chance the Reds had of taking something from the game evaporated in red mist on 85 minutes as Daniel Nardiello, who had been cautioned just 90 seconds earlier, launched a verbal volley at the referee to earn a second yellow.

Huddersfield could have doubled their undeserved lead on 87 minutes as David Graham beat Colgan but Shuker was in the right place to head over his own bar.

Two minutes later the Reds could have levelled yet again when Howard blazed over from Robbie Williams' cross.

BARNSLEY: Colgan, Heckingbottom (McParland 83), Reid, Hayes, McPhail, Howard, Austin (Williams 55), Kay, Shuker, Richards, Devaney (Nardiello 70).

    Subs: Flinders, Wroe.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN: Senior, Holdsworth, Adams, Hudson, Mirfin, Clarke, Brandon (Ahmed 73), Taylor-Fletcher (Graham 61), Schofield, Worthington, Booth.

    Subs: Rachubka, McAliskey, McCombe.

Town earned three crucial promotion points this afternoon with a superb win over Yorkshire and promotion rivals Barnsley. A single second half goal from Taylor-Fletcher in a tense derby saw Town move into joint second with Brentford with six games remaining.

The home side had the first effort on target on four minutes after catching Town on the break. Hayes carried the ball out of his half with Shuker in tow. Andy Holdsworth was the only defender between the strikers and the goal and as the right back made the challenge, Hayes squared the ball to the supporting Shuker whose effort was brilliantly cleared off the line by the recovering Worthington.

Moments later Hayes had another effort which keeper Senior held onto when the tall striker latched onto a long throw in from the left.

Town had their first effort in anger on twelve minutes when neat inter-play between Brandon and Schofield on the right flank saw the latter feed Hudson whose effort from the edge of the area flew over the bar.

Andy Booth was inches away from putting Town in front when he headed a Worthington cross goalward but Barnsley keeper Colgan made a superb save down at the base of his near post.

On 21 minutes Richards became the first player to be cautioned by referee Fletcher for diving.

The first caution was quickly followed by the second when Howard received a yellow card for what appeared to be an elbow on Hudson.

Barnsley made it a hat-trick of cards when Heckingbottom was cautioned for a foul on Brandon.

Hayes could have put the visitors ahead when he latched onto a Richards flick-on from Devaney's cross, but the striker could not direct his volley on target.

As the fourth official signalled two minutes of added time in the first half, Hudson tested keeper Colgan when he was fed through the centre by Booth but the midfielder's effort was straight at the Tykes stopper.

Deep into added time Clarke became the first Town player into the book for what the referee deemed to be persistent fouling.

Half Time: HuddersfieldTown 0 Barnsley 0

Town broke the deadlock ten minutes after half time when good work down the right flank between Brandon, Worthington and Holdsworth saw the right back fire in a low cross to the near post where Taylor-Fletcher stole in and tucked away a neat finish after a ricochet off keeper Colgan.

Barnsley made an immediate change with Robbie Williams on for Neil Austin.

Town nearly succumbed to an equaliser on the hour mark when Devaney's 25 yard strike rattled the bar and rebounded to Hayes who skewed his shot into the path of Richards who was given off-side.

On the hour mark Jacko made his first change when Fletch was replaced by David Graham.

Richards passed up a gilt-edged chance to equalise for the Tykes when Hayes crossed into the centre from the right flank but the advancing striker could not get the necessary power or accuracy to trouble Senior.

Moments later and Schofield could have added a second for the Terriers when he latched onto a Booth flick on but went for power rather than accuracy and blazed his effort over the bar.

Barnsley made their second change of the game on 70 minutes when Devaney was replaced by Nardiello.

On 72 minutes Town made their second change of the game when Chris Brandon was replaced by Adnan Ahmed.

With fifteen remaining Hayes went close for the visitors when his snap-shot evaded everybody and whistled past Senior's left hand post.

Schofield had another chance just moments later after good work down the left flank by Adams who fed the midfielder into the area but Schofield could not keep his curling effort down.

On 83 minutes Nardiello was entered into the referee's book for kicking the ball away and Ritchie made his final change of the game replacing Heckingbottom with McParland.

Nardiello, who had only on been on the field fifteen minutes , had not learnt his lesson and a minutes after his first caution he continued his back chat to referee Fletcher who showed him a second yellow and sent him for an early bath.

Graham could have wrapped up the game on 87 minutes when he latched onto a superb first time through ball from Booth, turned the defence and curled in an effort which Shuker headed off the goal line.

You can do it with IE but its tricky

You need to start copying before the page finishes loading. hit refresh if you arent quick enough. Probably easier to follow City Tykes advice and use a different browser

  7. Thanks both, for the advice

MSN doesn't work either - I thought it might seeing as using that browser allows me access to the commentaries whereas IE does NOT. However, the tip about hit refresh and copy as it is loading seems to do the trick - thanks for that. It has always puzzled me how some of you guys manage to do it. I know now!
Interesting reading the Huddersfield Rivals message board last night. The home fans seemed to have a mostly opposite view to the Reds fans who were there. How does that happen I wonder :pff Funny people football supporters, aren't they? Biased? Not a bit of it....
