As Mick McCarthy said during his live stream with Ben, concerning Clarke, simple changes like bringing domestic assistants in to wash the kit, insisting on a dress code including the wearing of Club blazers, overnight stays in hotels and the general introduction of more professional standards, had a profound affect on the players representing the Club at that time. Add to that the feeling they must have experienced, playing alongside and for two of the greatest players ever to grace the English game in Clarke and Hunter. It must have been awesome learning and improving under the tutelage of two established Internationals, who between them had played at the very highest level for quite a number of years.
Mick McCarthy said, I think, 'and the fact you were training and playing with Alan Clarke' as an answer to whether it felt like the club were going up in levels when he joined. Such was his standing in the game at the time.
That's right. You could not fail but to be in awe of a player of that standing and it must surely have motivated our lads to up their own personal performance levels for the Club.
