Mowatt: "We want to be in the top two." Interviews Alex Mowatt is keen for Barnsley to continue to meet expectations when the Reds travel to Shrewsbury on Tuesday evening. Continue reading on the official site...
Well promotion anyway.. But our bottom line is, we bring players through and sell... It may be Jan if we don't want to miss out on a few quid
He was asked about contract talks and he said he'd asked his agent to come in, but it hadn't been arranged yet. The interviewer did ask him about how he was enjoying it and if he'd like to stay, and he did give a very straight answer of yes. So we shall see. I think it would be nice to have some of the squad that are built around and allow us to have a nucleus that is more constant rather than a brand new team every 18 months. The way Mowatt has started this season, I wouldn't mind him forming part of a consistent nucleus for a good 4 or 5 years.
There would have to be a significant change of the plan.. for that to happen. Don't hold your breath..
It's interesting how a few comments down the years constitute a plan in the eyes of fans. A plan, needs an objective. My perception was Crynes objective was personal, to not have to plough his own money in any more. The objectives of the new owners have never been stated and we've just had a loose "not do anything crazy." I suspect they have more detailed ambitions and plans, but they haven't been shared as yet (if ever). That we've stated contract extensions are being looked at, suggests there is a little more planning going into it now. And if the undercurrent is maximise player value, it may well be that maximum value isn't derived in the first contractual phase. It would therefore make sense to extend a contract.
That is exacty why the Cryne's brough the plan into being... But we go over old ground If you have hope our new investors will "Up the ante" then great, I sincerely hope you're right...but I don't see it. The last January widow, did they spend or was it money that was already in place from previous sales come into play?. And the summer sale of Bradshaw all bar proves the plan where "the club runs within its means" is very much alive.. This pseudo working class hero bubble that some fans live in is all well and good... But in the real world, that is outside the boundary of Barnsley it's money that talks, like it or not. Unless the new owners do "up the ante" then the ..same old, same old of players leaving will continue..
Where have I said I expect them to spend more money? Some very sweeping assumptions you make. My comments relate to retention of players rather than hoping they are of value near the end of their contracts and getting a nominal fee, or letting them leave for free. It would seem the club want to retain some of our players, to maximise sale value, hence why they are starting to discuss new contracts.
That's the drawback of early contract talks I suppose. A player could become unsettled once it's realised they can get more money elsewhere.
Did the new owners sell anyone in January? Any previous sales were Cryne's money, they started from scratch. I know they spent the most we have ever spent in a January window.
Get him in the dressing room after the game for abit of water boarding bring a pen and a 6 year contract.
