The commentators in the boro game are slating the linesman for giving offside because the player didnt actually touch the ball. The other day in the hull game the referee allowed a goal because the player didn't actually touch the ball. Yet at Oakwell week in week out offside is given whenever a player goes anywhere near the ball. What exactly is the fecking rule because I don't understand it.
I made the exactly the same point after the Hull game. I thought it actually used the words being active - which meant a player jogging back towards being onside didnt count but anyone who moved towards the ball was deemed active. But the Hull game clearly showed that was wrong If managers fans and commentators dont understand the rule it needs clarifying
I remain convinced that a player doesnt need to TOUCH a ball to be offside. The rules according to FIFA: A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by: interfering with play or interfering with an opponent or gaining an advantage by being in the position No mention at all of having to touch the ball, the rules clearly state that you don't need to touch the ball to be penalised.
I think they got it right in the Sunderland game the lad was in the 6-yard box well offside and moving towards the ball and possibly getting in the goalkeeper's line of sight, offside I would say.
Re: I think they got it right in the Sunderland game It's crazy, as a defender I think if they are anywhere near and in an offside position you still have to be mindful of where they actually are. Bring back the old rule, no need for the confusion.
Re: I think they got it right in the Sunderland game this is pretty much what I was about to post, especially true if the opponent is in the penalty box, even if he is not interfering with play he is catching the eye of the defenders, goalie etc. Especially ridiculous are the examples where someone basically steps over the ball as it passes him and he's not offside, of course you are interfering with play if you come within 6 inches of the ball. The old rule wasn't perfect as you might argue its unfair to be given offside jogging out after a corner when it has fallen to a team mate who then hits a 30 yard screamer. However I think it's clear the new rule is more bother than it's worth and would prefer the conclusiveness of the old. edit: just noticed how old this thread is! I was looking at a different thread from today and it popped up in the 'similar threads' bit at the bottom. New fangled forum!
