...he appointed someone called Kerry McCarthy as Shadow environment secretary, She is a strict Vegan - fine - people should be able to have a lifestyle choice as long as it doesn't impact upon others. She, however, is quite militant and wants meat and dairy product to be treated like smoking and actively dissuade people from eating them. She is pushing the' bad for your health' argument heart disease, diabetes etc. but the 'sub text' judging from interviews, is that she is a supporter of VIVA and in the 'meat is murder' camp. I suspect the farming industry won't be supporting Labour if she remains in the post with those extreme views.
I emailed him to ask Cameron at PMs Questions if h came in the pigs mouth. Still waiting for a response. Still I suppose the farmers will support Cameron if he shags animals as well as eats them.
Ha can see it now fridges blacked out, butchers moved to back streets, as you say nowt against vegans as long as they don't try to impose it on others. She can stick her quorn up her arse though literally!
Perhaps we need a fresh look at farming and food production. Certainly with a rising global population and climate change - clearing vast swathes of land for grazing cattle on might not be the best way forwards.
agree with last part but meat like lamb an beef can be raised on land that is relatively poor and will not support arable farming e.g. sheep on scrub, moorland. Animals are still the best way to obtain digestible protein and fats from grass cellulose which is indigestible to non-ruminants. Not sure where you are referring to when you say "clearing vast tracts of land" New Zealand, Welsh and Yorkshire Lamb, Texan, Irish and Argentinian beef come from countries hardly strapped for space for the foreseeable future. There is huge overcapacity for food production overall in the Western world with mechanisation of arable farming but the problem is distribution and inequality between those countries and underdeveloped nations.
I'd argue the other way, I'm a meat eater but I like the animals to be reared ethically and not crammed in together, certainly not sheds and the like
I don't think the farming industry supports labour anyway as a generalisation it's a pretty middle class existence and background.
Pretty sure that policies are determined via the party not via individuals. In the same way that Corbyn would prefer not to be in NATO unless this is agreed by the majority of the policy makers then it won't become part of their manifesto. And if you really believe that the majority of meat that we eat comes from animals that have happily gamboled around for 2 years prior to being slaughtered then you're way off the mark.
Not sure if this was a response to my OP as I am sure there are still bad practices going on in livestock farming. Doesn't mean we should all be coerced into becoming Vegan though.
