Ok Stevie, sorry but not knowing your ,or if you have any mining expieirience,..i will try and explain what this all about, Now if you get a simple reel of cotton, and pull a length out say a foot, attch it to any thing, and then turn your bobbin of cotton you will see the cotton over lapping and eventually it would deize up, Now lets go to pilley pit, where i was a pony driver, the tubs used to come up a srteep incline from the mai line out of the pit, these were puled bu a small enginemm the rope when round a drum and a return wheel then lower the tubs on to the level where i took them to the Coal face,i had been on this jobe for some time, and when the full tubs went down,i used to sit with the engine driver, takung them down was easy ,just sit on the brake, and listen for the bell 1 to stop,2 to lower,3 to pull, this day the engine driver said do you want a go, of course i said yes, but he left me on my own, i tokk them down ok, but when i started to pull the empties back up,i did not notice the rope, not going on the drum evenly, the run would be a good 3rd of a mile long,a lot of rope, first one turn over lapped, then another,i should have stopped, and let some one sort it out, it got worse the rope over lapped the edge of the drum and seiezed up Job stopped,no one could do any thing, they had to send for the Rope menmexpert at splicing the rope, this they had to do, i had to pull the tubs up the rest of the way with my pony, they chpped the rope put a new lenght on,by splicing,a job they were going to do on the sunday any way,i think thats what saved me and the engine driver,,, Now the Engine driver his name was JACK SIMSONm a very good cyclist of that time, thought nowt of doing 50 miles before he went to work on the afters, he was as good as REG HARRIS..if you care to put those names in Google about cyclist in the 40,s
(Y) ...i knew a chap called .willis worked at old pilley pit.he were an old neigbour yrs ago .lived at hoyland.think he were a overman .or something like that good man he were . think is first name were harold .ring any bell's????
