One of the harshest in my memory was John Saunders. He was the captain of the 4th division promotion winning team in 1978. The story goes that then manager Alan Clarke told him he was being released the same evening as we'd just won promotion and as everyone was celebrating.
Norman Hunter came in as his replacement in the Summer of 1979. Unfortunately, he got injured away at Lincoln in the League Cup when making his debut. His injury meant he didn't make his league debut until towards the end of October. Initially, we brought in Alan Dugdale on a month's loan, but didn't make the signing permanent. After Dugdale left, we played Chambers alongside McCarthy in the centre of defence, with Collins at left back, until Hunter returned. We brought in Ian Evans, initially on loan, with the signing being announced on the day we lost 7-0 at Reading at the end of December. Neil Cooper, who could also play in the centre of the defence, was signed for £35,000 a week or so later. Evans was signed for a club record fee of £95,000 in March 1980.
Wasn't that the game big Tony Cunningham came to our attention? He gave Hunter a real tough time of it.
It was, mate, yes, alongside a certain Mick Harford & Trevor Peake (who was to win the FA Cup with Coventry City in 1987).
Kev you really should write a book ,with the official knowledge you have and all the invaluable ad libs of personal knowledge it would be a fantastic addition to all the other BFC related books. I've a feeling with all your knowledge it would have to come in volumes and be expensive but would be very popular among us fans.
Thank you for that, Marlon. Much appreciated, old mate. However, other than my archaeological work, I'm retired and UTTERLY bone idle!
Dictate one for his missis to write more like, this is Lil thar asking. By the way he would need a dictaphone, just glad he aint got my number.
Supertyke will type it up on no time ,it might come out slightly different to what he was saying like but still ,beggars can't be choosers .
