We drew 0-0 with Liverpool the then European Champions at Anfield, in the League Cup quarter finals. THIRTY YEARS!!!! Blimey, where does the time go? http://www.barnsley-mad.co.uk/footydb/loadotd.asp * *Many thanks to Tykesmad for provided the information and facility.
Boy does that make me feel old!! I remember that very well but its frightening to realise it was 30 years ago I was one of the few Barnsley fans who made it in time for the kick off as I was living in Liverpool at the time and didnt have to come over the M62 in the fog Never seen us lose at Anfield
I am now officially old, thanks for that mate, because I remember that as plain as day, so if the next 30 years pass that quickly I'll be 80 before I know it! :-(
I went on the bus from the Pheasant at Monk Bretton....on it was, along with 50 others, a certain Gordon Owen..(not the one that posts on ere) 2 or 3 years before signed for us.....we were one of the early arrivers so saw all the game......never seen as much trouble at a game, before or since, quite manic before and after..
I was there. for some of the match, we were delayed by the fog and missed the first half and 15 minutes of the second half. We abandoned the car in a side street where this kid asked for a pound to watch the car and I told him to sod off. Had visions of coming back to find the car on bricks with no wheels......
Re: I was there. I went with my mum and dad on a bus from woolley colliery - we managed to get there at the end of the first half. Crowd pushed me to the front so I could see. We seemed to have more fans than them on the night. Incredible atmosphere and match. Getting out was a nightmare as the locals weren't too happy! One or two of them tried attacking our coach but thought better of it when 30 miners got off the coach to say hello. Not got a bad record at anfield - 3 games, 2 wins and 1 draw
Re: I was there. I was there. I went in a minibus with the lads from the Woodman football team. We went on the East Lancs road and got there well before the kick off. There was some big lads in the team so needless to say we didn't see any trouble.
Re: I was there. Went on the special. Had to walk under escort from Lime Street as I recall. All sorts of stuff being chucked from the flats at us, scallies picking off stragglers at the back. Bloody scary that were.
I arrived shortly before half time I think after being held up by bad accident and fog. Best atmosphere at an away game I can rmember and almost outnumbered home supporters. Those were the days.
I was there Well, for the second half. Delayed on the M62 like everyone else. I was allowed out of school early so I could get the coach. British education system, you can't beat it.
We achieved the result without two of our star players Ronnie Glavin & Derrick Parker, as well. That was a fantastic team.
Afternoon off school Fog, traffic, bricks, coppers, singing, delirium, bricks, bricks, fog. Hated scousers ever since.
Re: Afternoon off school I went on a coach with my Under 12 football team, remember being stuck in traffic after the game as young scallies tried breaking the coach windows with a house brick. The smallest could barely lift the brick up. Cannot recall a single thing about the match.
Saw the last 20 minutes- we had a smash on the M62 Still a great night though, apart from trouble outside, Barnsley fans singing Shankly's dead hardly helped matters either.
