I've just had a really enjoyable few hours rummaging through my programme collection (took delivery of a large batch today which means I'm now only missing 6 home programmes from the past 60 seasons) and crossing off all the friendly programmes I have from a list that Turvey Tyke kindly e-mailed me. You'd be surprised at some of the teams we've played over the years, but an entry for 14 May 1951 shows that we played Dundee United in a Festival of Britain tournament. We also played Falkirk, Rapid Vienna and Haarlem in the tournament. Anyway, according to Dave's list the Reds ran out 8-1 winners, with 4 goals from Cec McCormack, 2 from Tommy Taylor and a goal apiece from Eddie McMorran and Johnny Kelly. Takes us three months to score 8 at Oakwell these days!

Makes you weep doesn't it, after what we've had to watch this last season.

I really struggle to understand the career of Cec McCormak. Due to the war he didn't start his pro career until 23 at Gateshead where he scored 19 goals in 29 matches. He's then transferred to Middlesbrough in the top division and although he doesn't seem to play regularly, he scores 18 goals in 37 games. A strike rate that any forward would be proud of, but from Middlesbrough he signs for non-league Chelmsford City!? He spends a year there before he signs for us and bangs in 42 goals in 50 appearances in division 2. His reward for such a phenomenal goal scoring record? Surely a move back to a top-flight side and an England call up? Nope, Notts County, just promoted to division 2. And after scoring a bucket load of goals for them, off to Kings Lynn.

Summats not right. I'd love to know his story. I wonder if he was plagued by injuries?

At the time it was a lot to do with maximum wage. Non league clubs could afford to pay as much as league clubs in some cases if they had a rich owner and the player could get more money from a cushy job that the owners got them. I know that Yeovil and Chelmsford took a few of our players that could have had good careers in league football but wanted more money or thought that football wasn't a long career it certainly wasn't as lucrative as it is now. In Mccormacks case he was a fitter by trade during the war and was getting more money as a fitter than a footballer and after Kings Lynn at 35 years old he emigrated to Canada where he lived for the rest of his life.
