You'll love this one Kev, zoom in - it's a fairly hi res image and the scans reveal so much. Yet to scan Rockley and Stainborough Park, which is the north-westerly end of my collection which spans the area between the two big Wentworth houses.
The quality of the photographs is very impressive. You're right, mate, the detail in these you posted tonight is top notch. Thank you, Paul.
I've relatives at High Melton. Whats the historical interest there? There has been several digs near the gamekeepers cottage along Marr Drag looking for Roman settlements. Talking to a guy a few weeks ago that showed me pictures of what seems to be a Roman Port on the River Dearne at Darfield.
These are real photographic cards printed straight from the negatives. In the digital age we forget just how much the old cameras could see. Saying that, I'm having great fun scanning them onto the old mactop and wandering around close up. There is so much you can't see and don't notice by eye. There are over 400 of these too!!
There is a great book, Ancient South Yorkshire, written by a professor from Hallam Uni, I think. Kev will know, I have it but it's in london. You can buy it in town.
Morning Young Nudger I've not seen any of the relevant documentation, but a particular field near the college is to be Geo physed. Apparently, there's some evidence of medieval dwellings. If these readings prove fruitful, then we'll examine the possibilities of putting in a few exploratory trenches and take it from there.
It's fairly obvious That they're extremely popular when posted on here, mate. Keep up the good work &, if possible, keep posting them.
isnt that the picture on here? http://www.rotherhamweb.co.uk/gallery/wentworth1/ Saw that as i was looking for some pics of Wentworth Castle the other day as im getting married there a week on saturday. Came across the picture with the castle and its four towers intact! Looks great.
Re: isnt that the picture on here? Yep, except my card is in better condition. That's Stainborough Castle behind the main house. Unfortunately it was massively neglected and built from the cheapest and poorest quality sandstone available. That was Strafford cuuting corners trying to keep up with Rockingham as they tried to out-build each other. I have about 12 cards on that folly alone, I'm hoping to have them all scanned over the next few days. One is a repro of this beautiful watercolour made in the 1910s, would have made an ace wedding invite.
Re: isnt that the picture on here? im just doing the table plan and menu and have ripped and embossed the 4 tower shot into the background... looks ok. look forward to seeing them.
Omen - That website is a bit confused, it's mixing up the the two families and the two houses and estates.
Re: isnt that the picture on here? all this money that footy players have got... if i were them i think id build a nice little castle like the one at wentworth!
Re: isnt that the picture on here? Okay mate, I'll scan them tomorrow and post them here they might be of use. I have a few of the main house Wentworth Castle itself, Baroque and Palladian fronts. Some nice ones of the grounds and gardens too, about 30 altogether of Stainborough.
