He's a £500k gamble. Just like all the other players. As Hecky said, some won't be good enough. We can't spend £5m on a striker like Bristol did. Just won't happen. What I'm surprised at is every other player we seem to have signed the fans have been gutted and said we've got a great player (whether they make championship level who knows). With Potts I've rarely seen anything remotely positive about him. Still, will give him every chance like the rest.
He only arrived at the club 2 days prior, he will have barely known any of the players names will hardly have trained with them. The bigger worry was why mowatt was played out of position and infront of hammill and Hedges. Two natural wingers.
His record of goals and assists suggest that he is a good player, at least at that level. So I cant actually work out whether they really think he's crap, or it's just sour grapes. Enough people around me used to criticise Eaden and Liddell, yet they were very clearly top-notch players for us, and for the clubs they went on to join.
Hopefully just a not knowing team mates thing, but I have to admit I was alarmed at the lack of effort to run for balls that were well in his reach. A poor debut but shouldn't have started.
I remember a player coming down from Scotland a few years ago whose first game didn't inspire many, I bet they won't admit it now. His name was Ronnie Glavin.
I was going to come on here and make the same point. Sometimes the fans make the best scouts, especially when such an overwhelming majority from a lower level club have a negative opinion of their own player. There's plenty of times fans are split about a player and that's a different matter. However they are virtually unanimous about him. They seem to be as incredulous as we would have been if Leeds had signed Reece Brown. It might be a good idea for clubs to stop dismissing all fans as numbskulls
We were all pretty incredulous when decent clubs came in for Jonathan Walters and Chris Wood though. From what I've read, they are saying that he was decent for them last season but poor in League 1 the year before. But it's easy to forget he was very young then. Hecky must see something in him, otherwise we'd never have signed him, let alone for a reasonably substantial fee.
I think Potts was just about the least worrying thing yesterday. You'd expect him to struggle, first time at this level, not knowing his team mates etc.
Too true. We lost the first game 3-0 at home to Wednesday that season. I missed it because of my mate's wedding. Next day in the pub someone said to me 'that Glavin's a reight pig in a poke' which definitely wasn't meant to be a compliment. I reminded him of this several times over the years!
Aye and Allan Clarke was expecting him to play as a defensive midfielder and when Ronnie scored his first goal he promptly got dropped because Clarke didn't think his defensive qualities were up to much!!
