Not intending this to be a thread on the merits or otherwise of the various manifestos, but I thought that people on this forum would be interested to know that the Labour one includes a specific commitment to review the events of Orgreave as part of the section on historical injustices.

I'm not aware of any similar commitments by other parties, other than this being something that the Tories specifically ruled out when Amber Rudd was Home Secretary a few years ago.

It's buried away in the detail, and I'm not sure it will get picked up widely in the press but, given the local relevance, I've quoted the wording below.

Another snippet of particular local relevance (highlighted via a Tweet from Dan Jarvis).

This really needs shouting from the roof tops, as there are no doubt many ex miners and their families who unfortunately will be attracted to Reform, particularly those in former red- wall areas

Great spots, Sir. Concrete actions, rather than 'big ticket' items which are unaffordable/unrealistic/unappealing to the wider electorate. I think Starmer's government has the potential to surprise people. But the doing will be harder than the saying.

I’ll echo, having just read this and knowing nothing about it prior, that much more needs to be made of this around Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham.

Votes teetering on being lost to the far right neo-nazi’s of Reform may not all be lost if the electorate were made aware of this.

I’d skimmed the manifesto and not picked up on this at all - and I take more than an active interest. Those that just watch the tv and/or read the online propaganda may not all be swayed to Reform if they knew. That is a proper policy that should attract votes in the thousands around here - and I’d bet the majority don’t know.

Vaguely aware about Orgreave but not aware about the Pension issue.
Could you summarise the issue please?

One of those impacted by it might be able to explain more fully than me, but I believe the Govt took some of the reserve funds from the scheme under it's own control and prevented retired miners from accessing it through their pensions. They've been petitioning the government to return the funds, to no avail, to date.

Thanks for posting. I’ve been trying to get the Labour Party’s policy on Miners pensions from Stephanie Peacock for months. But her Office wrote back to me and said she couldn’t answer me because she wasn’t my constituency MP, and I should write to my own MP. Crackers!

What"s crackers!! Let me explain. I was asking about Labour Party policy - from an excellent local MP who has been the most vocal in the Country on this matter - rightly. I was asking on behalf of my Dad - ex coal miner from Grimethorpe.

The consequence of accepting her Office's advice would have been me writing to ask the same question of my local MP . It would have gone something like:

    Dear Rishi........

do you want me to go on? As I said. Crackers!

Meanwhile, how many ex miners will vote for Farage's collective who'll do nix on this whatsoever.

It's standard convention for MPs to refer anything to your local constituency MP. Admittedly frustrating if your own MP is useless, but is presumably intended to stop individual MPs getting inundated by casework from all over the country.
