So, this is a bit of a strange one but I know there are people on here with a huge range of backgrounds who might know. I am currently compiling a large scale document at work and want to somehow access the historic census data for the area but can't seem to find this information anywhere and wondered if anyone had any idea how to find such a thing

You will be able to access it free at the local archives or for a subscription at Ancestry.co.uk or Findmypast.co.uk. From the first 1841 to the latest available 1911.

I've done a lot of genealogy over the last couple of years, if you want any advice or help please let me know. To be successful you need to use a combination of Ancestry.com, Findmypast and an excellent site called Freebmd. It can get rather expensive if you're adding on buying copies of birth, marriage and death certificates...but the snippets of information can be invaluable.
If you're looking for the overall picture given by the census' rather than individual people, you may need to look outside the genealogy sites.
