You've probably seen the news about Royal Mail, the state they're in (on their knees) and what UK Gov PLC are planning to do to sort it out. I'm responsible for spending £3million of my employers money with Royal Mail so I have a vested interest and an informed opinion. Because the media and unions are saying Joe Public (ie most of you lot) are up in arms and dead agaisnt this partial sell off, I thought I'd ask and see what you all thought. Does Joe public think this sell off is good for the UK or don't we care because all we want is an affordable postal system that works? I'd be interested to hear what you think.

I think, in the present climate, talk of more privatisation is absolute madness.

    It's tricky

as with so many parts of the public and private sector, the running costs and especially pensions now cost more money than there is to go around so logically the only thing to do is to a) cut costs or b) borrow money or in this case c) sell it off.

Am not a big post user so don't have too strong an opinion on it but bottom line is a business that doesn't make profits can't survive. Royal Mail needs to become profitable somehow but not sure if selling it off will help.

It should be a nationalised company

The problems being faced are a direct consequence of the deregulation of the Royal Mail's business and allowing certain aspects out to tender, which has resulted in the stripping down of their business as the profitable parts have been creamed off leaving Royal Mail still to deliver the unprofitable bits - e.g. a letter from Penzance to John O'Groats.

To not only privatise the national postal service, but actually to contemplate putting it into foreign ownership, is ridiculous. It's part of the infrastructure of the country.

Do we not think that the system of sending letters

Is somewhat dated and that there are now so many other communication streams that really make the business a huge white elephant?

The only people who now send letters are cold calling companies or Utility billing companies. I don't particularly want our money from taxes holding up an outdated system when there are far cheaper and easier channels to use.

I've now realised that serious posting isn't my bag

My postie woke me up at 7.10 this morning to give me a recorded delivery letter.

My computer has still to find a way to get me out of bed at daft O'Clock so I suppose your right.

When they get a suspension device for cart wheels and Mr Bell makes his telephony device of a size suitable for the front parlour then technology will have well and truly 'arrived'

    Just think about TNT

Delivering your mail. First class post would rocket to £2 a go plus. Then when they got a foothold £5 a go and wait for it, letters to outlying areas would not be covered by them.
