How many clubs have we played away on the last day that were getting promoted? Been to Oxford, Wigan x 2 and Newcastle coming up in a fortnight. Any more? Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
It's a shame Newcastle look like blowing winning the league. Can't be many clubs that have played away at the league champions two seasons in a row in their last match of the season.
Luton 82. We gave them a guard of honour, played them off the pitch, conceded a last minute equaliser and then got pelted with coins when their fans invaded the pitch.
Yes it was away at the old Filbert street, at Leicester. When was the visit to Oxford then, was it back in season '84-85 ? Heres our home win against them that season, and a rare hat trick from one of our strikers.
Yeah I was at that one. I played against Gordon Owen in the early 90s. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
Wasnt Oxford's old Manor Ground an absolute shambles. At least, thats what it always looked like on telly.
Yeah it was, but looking back it was like a other grounds back in the day. Shrewsbury, Wimbledon very similar because they'd all come from non league. Oxford had a sloping pitch if I remember right. There wasn't half as much "ground snobbery" back then as most stadiums were quite basic regardless of size. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
Newcastle are by no means guaranteed promotion just yet, they are cracking up at the run in, I would not be at all surprised if Huddersfield pip them to the post.
The idea that we could get them automatic promotion by winning at Newcastle doesn't bare thinking about.
Seem to remember Middlesbrough coming to Oakwell and winning 3 nil last day of the season to seal promotion maybe around 87? They had the kop and west stand and probably had more fans than us
Speaking of promotion parties and going away to Oxford, remember our players were not up for it on that last day in May '97. A few sore heads maybe and we got thrashed 5-1.
Christ that makes me feel old! I was there that day & it looks like something from donkeys years ago..... prob cos it is lol. We absolutely battered Luton that day and led thru an Alan Birch goal if i remember correctly. Their leveller was virtually the last kick. Their fans invaded pitch at the end & pelted us with coins, cig lighters & all manner of objects. Then in bus park some nutter was taking shots at us with a bloody air rifle!! Pretty eventful day all round....
