Do we think it has suddenlynstarted developing good players or could it be that we have always done so but bad first team management and a reluctance to give our own youth a chance has halted the progress of many players who would otherwise have been good enough? Is it a coincidence that we have suddenly brought through a whole host of players who seem good enough now that we are so skint that the manager has no option but to give them their chance?

Definitely youth is now getting a chance due to lack of money but over the years thousands of young talented players will have lost out due to managers with no courage or vision to bring these lads through .The players will always be there bad coaching and management

Cryne and Mansford have already been planning developing the academy and the coaches for next season down to under 8s to keep the production line going.. Cryne will still fund by a considerable amount what it needs to retain '2' status.

Or is it that the Championship was too big a jump for them to start off, but League 1 isn't?

if you have noticed there is alot of time and money going into the academy
we have a partnership with benfica which is mostly based on the academy
on barnsley lotto 20% of what barnsley fans put in goes to the academy
and i think that holiday website the club set up goes to the academy when someone books through that website

Its probably a situation of needs must

obviously if you get a player like john stones hes going to play no matter what however , it takes a brave mananger to throw in a few kids when we are scrapping relegation every year in the championship. its easier to go buy a laiker from abroad who is a gamble but is physically ready ala bogdanovic or ferenczi.

in our current position now of both being skint and in a less pressured league placing we can hopefully give the young lads a chance to find out if they are going to be good enough

Watching the under 18s is a much more enjoyable experience then watching the first team that's for sure. I think it's a generation thing the last lot who are now in U21S and first team bench or Bury have never really been anything to right home about at any level from what I've seen despite what some on here think and they've been developed by the same team of coaches, the current crop of youngsters are just better then anything we've had in years, take a look at where these kids in the under 18s come from though and it could explain what's happening, they're from Doncaster, Wakefield, Basset Law, Pontefract, and suchlike I think the biggest difference now to what we've had in the past is a combination of better scouting at a very young age and the fact Leeds Wednesday & United haven't been pumping as much effort and money into the coaching development & recruitment in this area recently as what we have and as a result we're getting some real talent coming through the system for a change.

There is no correlation between the age a player makes his debut and the length of his subsequent career, or the level at which his career will progress. This is particularly true when the debut is as a result of injury pressure rather than because a talented individual has forced his way into the team on merit. Sorry to burst the bubble of expectation but people need to wait until these players have played 40 or 50 games before making this type of conclusion.

Maybe it's the division we were in. I can honestly say that other than John Stones, I can't think of a single academy product over the last 10 or so years who was good enough to play in the championship week in week out.

    Oh and Butterfield.

I think our current crop have been given the luxury of more game time as league 1 is closer to their current level, I get the feeling that a couple of the more raw talents like Abbot and Holgate wouldn't have impressed as much if we were playing in the league above as I don't think they're ùp to that standard yet. Bree is borderline there in my opinion.

It's no coincidence for me that the last time we had a big glut in young talent coming through was the last time we were in this position, with the likes of Kay, Tonge, Williams and just before them, Austin becoming regulars in the team.

I think this is about right. Obviously John Stones was an exception but as we all know he is an exceptional talent who would shine at any level.
