I can see the arguement for that, but we have to remember that the present crop of youngsters (Jarman, Wroe generation) have come through when the club has been at it's lowest ebb for over 20 years and at a time when there has been little or nothing in the way of quality coaching. FFS, Bodges was coach at one bit. And expectation levels have been pretty low.

Let's judge the work that Simon Davey does over the next couple of years and the effect he has on quality levels

Austin "

and if you cast your mind back a bit Fallon

rumour is that Atkinson will be OK too

Its not all bad

If we're running at a loss

and signing 18 yr olds from Scarboro, and the current crop arent even at League 2 standard, Im struggling to see the financial sense in whatever the Academy is costing us year after year.

Reserve team football is pretty pointless, hence why some clubs disband their reserve team set up. We should be getting our lads loan deals for them to get competitive experience. and gett ruthless with the ones that are pub standard.

And do what with the property ? Houses ,flats full of residents moaning about football traffic and conjestion. Where would all the schoolkids go to train after school etc etc . Never... I recon one of the main reasons Barnsley Council are in the club is beacause of that Acadamy space and football in the comunity programme.

I fully agree about loan deals and getting ruthless with the dross.

Loanee Candidates (preferably to a place where they will get some steel put into them)
Jarman
Wroe
Coulson
Wright (already got the steel, needs some confidence)
Atkinson

Free Transfer
Williams (sadly)
McParland
Jarman (if no improvement after loan)
Wroe

Course

none of them wouldve come through without the Academy? if there was someone amongst the current crop good enough, we'd have been talking about them from last night, or at least seeing them make the odd appearance in league games. For every Flinders, we produce 5 or 6 others that would otherwise be stacking shelves. not sure the sums add up. at all.

acadamy or whatever ???

does not matter what its called , its still the lifeblood of a club like ours , pure folly to even think about shutting it , GS knows this , AR knows this ...

Far be it for me to talk for SM..

but what I think he's getting at is the "Academy" is no better than the old youth setup we used to have, which was run at a fraction of the cost.

Correct

our best crop of youngsters (Eaden, Moses, Liddell, Watson etc) came through without the expensive facilities, admin fees, infra structure and all that goes into having Academy status. Im not talking about not coaching young footballers, just not spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on maintaining a title. and use the money saved to scout and attract players like Coulson. Far better for them to be experiencing competitive football in lower leagues than reserve team football at our expense.

But can we look at our youth scheme in isolation?

Unless you're a Barnsley fan why would you send your kids to our youth setup rather than the better funded academies that would be competing with it for talent?

Times have changed from those good old days you see with the rose tinted glasses.

im sorta in agreemnet , but without acadamy status how do we hope to compete against the plethora of bigger clubs that surround us ?

maybe the point is we dont actually have the raw talent at the club that we had at one stage ??

RE: Barnsley FC ,is the club as a whole unit

and should be looked at in that way otherwise you would be still having a slash behind some railway sleepers, Perhaps not just now, but how many players have come to Oakwell in the past as a direct result of the facilities.. quite a few I seem to recall. Move on move up dont look back theres only the past back there.........

I agree

We should be investing in expanding our coaching setup with quality.

If there's money at all then this is where it should go.

They could level it.....

......and get some dodgy gypo's in to cover it. Then it'd be the Tarmacademy.

I do chuckle about Flinders,

if Turnbull hadnt got injured Flinders would have been released at the end of that season. More luck than judgement.

FACT!
