Ok heres another thread about our memories of previous matches and seasons, involving our next opponents.
Lets look at our home game against Brentford, in what was our last home game of the 2002-03 season.
And one player springs to mind immediately doesnt he... Isaiah Rankin!!
2002 was a totally miserable time for us all after relegation, and then administration, and what also turned into another relegation battle to stay up. Steve Parkin had been quite rightly sacked but he should never have got the job anyway in our relegation season, that was a big mistake by John Dennis hiring him.
We had to go away to the champions Wigan in the final game, a game which we never expected to win anyway, so this last home game was vital against a mid table Brentford team. Despite dominating the match the tension was unbearable, until Rankin of all players popped up with the late winner. Oakwell erupted after that goal didnt it and it was a huge relief that we were finally safe, before that last game.

Rankin should always be well thought of for that goal. Had we slipped to league two it would have been even harder to get back to our natural level.

Also never had a problem with his celebration in front of our dugout when he scored against us whilst out on loan. Pretty offensive that your club think that little of you that they don't mind you playing for the opposition, so showing his frustration at it all can't dampen what he did on that day against Brentford.

Remember it well. Went to wigan on the last day and straight on to Blackpool for the night.

I think Nicky Wroe made his debut that day?

Some dour times in league one. I'm glad we came back quickly this time.

I think Rankin's attitude stank when he rubbed our noses in it like that, while scoring against us on loan at Grimsby the following season. But obviously he knew he'd not been given a fair chance by the club and I think our fans were having a go at him anyway. So his actions that day meant he knew he was finished with us.
And back to those dark days of almost going out of business that season in Oct & Nov '02, wasnt it somebody called Peter Doyle who saved us at first ? I dont know anything about him but Ive heard hes got connections and you dont mess with him lol.

I went ******* mad when Rankin scored.

Nearly flattened my Forest-supporting ex. I was screaming in her face and trying to dance with her for what seemed to be about 10 minutes. Lucky girl.

I seriously think that relegation to the fourth division would've finished us off. It's as important a goal as any Barnsley player has ever scored.

I think Glynn Hodges did well enough as our temporary manager at the time, because he kept us up after all. Im glad though that we didnt keep him on long term.

And at the start of what turned out to be the relegation season Baka, didnt Rankin score a late winner for us at home to Notts Florist ?

Highlight of that last game away at Wigan was watching a pigeon stroll around in the centre circle, untroubled by any football, for the whole 90 minutes.

Yes I was at grim on sea when Ranking scored as well. Many of our lot were kicking off with the stewards and police because they wouldn't let them leave at half time.

    Miserable, freezing day as well.

Another one was Northampton away in the cup around that time. We just didn't turn up.

That was one of the most limp wristed promotion parties I've ever been at. I think there were about 14k there and the atmosphere was pants.

I was at Oxford when they beat us 4 0 on the last day and there's was much better with pitch invasion etc.

Speaking of promotion parties, we'll be at Newcastles on the last day.

I remember Spackman's (spit! I still hate him!) team beating Forest. Without checking, I think it was 2-0 but couldn't tell you who scored.

It was indeed a relegation season. The one where we sacked Spackman after losing at Hillsborough (we took the lead but were so, so bad, and there could never have been a reprieve for him) and appointed Steve Parkin.

Only match that sticks in my mind that season, was going away to Mansfield, which we won 1-0, was vital in us staying in L1

Yes we earned two really important wins away at two of our fellow strugglers, Mansfield & Cheltenham. And I believe we also won at Brentford as well that season so the vital win in our last home game against them was a league double. Hope thats a good omen for today!
Its interesting to see some fans say that could well have been the end for us if we had gone down, well look at how things turned around after that when we appointed Gudjon the Iceman in 2003. And Peter Risdale of course came on board

I prefer the Brentford home game when we beat em 3-0 mid 90s but only because John ******* Pearson scored. Outpacing the defence. John ******* Pearson.

Was that the game on halloween weekend in Oct '92, when we came from 0-2 down to beat them 3-2 ? And like you say, John Pearson got 2 for us that day (and Wayne Biggins the other).
