Just had another look at our team on Saturday and was surprised to find that I had never heard of any of them prior to us signing them. I'm meaning when we signed Nyatanga the first time of course. But all the others, even the ones on the bench, were all new to me when we signed them. Even Sam Winnall, who had scored loads last season, passed me by. Having said that, I wouldn't have a clue who the leading scorers are in League One this year. I presume Garner at Preston is up there, but wouldn't know who else. I think the only players we have had at the club this season who I had heard of before we signed them were Lita, Treacy, Jennings, Bailey, Stewart and Ramage. Which makes me think I'd rather have more unknowns! But it just goes to show how out of touch I am with anything outside Oakwell nowadays. There are current England players who could sit next to me on the bus without me recognising them. Actually, there are probably Reds players from this season who could sit on the bus next to me without me recognising them. And yet I could rattle off random facts for almost every player who appeared on a Topps card, a Panini sticker or a Top Trump card between 1977 and 1982. Actually, come to think of it I can probably rattle off random facts for most singles that got in the charts during those years, but would struggle to remember the name of any albums I like that have been released post-1996, let alone the names of any tracks from them. ****, it's an age thing isn't it.
