By and large, yes. Norton Utilities is fairly good too.

Why do you need a registry cleaner?

Use Window Washer or something similar - multimedia files are unlikely to be registered by Windows except in the documents / Internet history. It's normally only applications that are installed that are found in the registry, I think.

Window Washer will clear out your temporary Internet files and your Internet page history and, I think, there's an option to completely wipe free hard drive space (as opposed to just "deleting" the file).

Regular housekeeping like running Scan Disk and Defragmenter as well as registry / Window cleaners will make your PC run quicker and reduce a lot of error messages...

If it's just the wife try the following:

Go to Control Panel -> Internet Options and click "Clear History" - it'll stop 'em appearing in the address bar when you type a partial address.

Going to Start -> Settings -> Taskbar & Start Menu, then clicking "Start Menu", "Customize" and then "Clear" will delete any files from your documents history.

Also, if you delete the contents of:

    C:\Documents and Settings\your Windows user name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

That's all the web-sites, pictures and such like that you've downloaded (also your cookies, I think, so make sure you have your passwords for sites like the BBS).

Just click on tools on the menu bar at the top of your IE browser and select "Internet Options". You can clear the history and cookies etc in there.
