My Grandad used to tell me about a tradition around Barnsley where it was luck to let in a stranger carrying a piece of coal and saying the above. Anyone else heard that or was it just a story?

    Happy New Year all.....

Mum and dad (we are all from tarn) have lived darn south for 25 years and my mum still does this every year. Not heard anyone else outside Barnsley do this ... Strange eh!

I remember doing that as a kid.

9/10 years old was just to neighbours.

11/12/13 years old was at the local boozer, which was much more profitable :)

I was baby sitting one year when a young lad cane 'to let the new year in' because he had black hair! Then wanted a couple of quid for the privilege!

I used to go round saying that but without the coal, in the 80s l made more money on the ny eve run, than Guy Fawkes & carol singing put together.
