Taking my wife for a few nights, looking for tips on where to stay, looking for something authentic fairly central, somewhere locals would use bars restaurants. decent nightlife.pavement cafes jazz bars, Latin Quater?
Latin Quarter certainly has plenty of bars and restaurants, but they tend to be frequented by tourists rather than locals. Last time we went we stopped here. http://www.paris-montparnasse-hotel.com/uk/index.php It's a very decent price for Paris and the rooms are really nice. Metro station is less than a minute's walk away. The surrounding area of Montparnasse has loads of cafes, bars and restaurants all within 5 minutes walk. Highly recommend it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montparnasse
I would advise the following areas, Montmartre and the Marais. See the next links www.aparisguide.com/montmartre/index.html. I can recommend the Terrass Hotel, stayed many times before I moved here and good for Montmarte, and metro connections. www.aparisguide.com/lemarais/index.html. Je vous souhaite un bon sejour ! Have a nice time!! PT
Best advice I can give, is not to ask advice on here! Use TripAdvisor. What I will say is it's almost impossible to do Paris on the cheap, and enjoy it. Have fun.
Dare I say last time I was there it was actually mainly an African persuasion on the streets? I didn't enjoy my first trip there but was only about 13/14, I'd love to go back and give it another go.
Paris is very over-rated, I found it to be a pretty miserable place, chocablock with tourists, definitely in no rush to go back. Make sure it's Spring or Summer when you go, I must say the only part of it I enjoyed was sitting outside a cafe in the morning drinking coffee watching the world go by - although to be fair I can do that in tarn!
