Flipping heck! I hope all our friends on the BBS living over there in North America are okay and managing to cope with the dreadful weather they're having. http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/25664311
Cheers Big Lil, one of the best places on Earth I have had the pleasure of visiting. I was looking for pics yesterday funnily enough, as due to the press coverage I was amazed there wasn't more mention of Niagara. I am now wondering what the difference is between modern day and the early part of last century when they completely froze over but in temperatures not as severe as this week ? I'll not sleep now.
It's always looked stunningly beautiful to me, mate, and even more so now. However, it's worrying for how people over there are coping with these temperatures, especially those who are struggling to pay for heating or living rough.
Yep, been in regular touch with my family in Oshawa (t'other side of Toronto. They are finding it harder to cope this year then usual, as they get older. My Uncle is pretty much housebound, so my Auntie has to cope with this silly law that you have to keep your driveway (or the part of it that meets the road) clear. She is spending hour after hour shovelling snow that refuses to stop falling. When they were both working, it was the kind of chore that they could give to local kids, who earned a fortune in pocket money for it, but they can't pay this year. Fortunately they are comfortable enough, but it is a big worry for some who daren't risk the fine.
Thankfully, the temperatures are supposed to returning to normal over the next few days. However, how long it'll take to shift all the snow & ice goodness only knows. Hopefully, your Aunty & Uncle will continue to cope and will be fine.
Parts of Niagra Falls always freezes in winter.........its just that probably more of it has frozen this time
Thanks for your concern, Big Lil, but here on the western side we are quietly smirking at the weather they're having in the East, well in a North v South sort of way (it's all West v East here). Obviously feel sorry for people who are struggling with it, while we enjoy seasonally warm temperatures here in Calgary - it's a positively balmy +3C and has been pretty "warm" for the past week. There are a couple of BBSers from Toronto and Chicago who are likely not faring as well as we are. As for Niagara - if you get the chance, it's a must-see place as far as I am concerned. We were there in July and it is breath-taking, particularly from the Canadian side - and I'm not just being biased as the famous Horseshoe Falls are only visible from the Canadian side. Standing on the edge (where photo 4 is taken) is an amazing experience, but with the speed and volume that flows over, it amazes me that it can freeze. Astonishing photos.
Well in the sense that "Niagara Falls" is a vast area, then tiny horizontal-flowing parts of it likely do freeze every year. But, as far as I am aware, it is very rare for the vertical falls themselves to freeze, and certainly not like we have evidenced this winter - the speed and volume usually does not permit the falls to freeze vertically. One thing's for sure,no-one (in their right mind!) will be taking a dip in it this winter!
Always amazed me that you can get so up close and personal to the falls as that picture shows. Almost touch it with your hands as as it tumbles over the edge. One of natures finest sights to be sure. And hoping to get a peep at the Northern Lights tonight - fingers crossed ! !
