Barnsley manager Simon Davey challenged his side to maintain their momentum after Brian Howard scored a late equaliser to secure a point in a contentious Coca-Cola Championship encounter at Colchester.

The Tykes were awarded the penalty after 85 minutes by referee Andy Hall, who adjudged Johnnie Jackson had handled Kim Christensen's shot in the area, and Howard converted his second successful spot-kick of the game.

Hall also sent off a player from either side - goalkeeper Dean Gerken for the hosts and Barnsley captain Paul Reid - as the sides fought out a 2-2 draw at Layer Road.

Davey, though, claimed the Tykes could have come away with victory and urged his side to keep up their form after an opening-day defeat against Coventry last week was followed by victory over Darlington in the Carling Cup.

Davey said: "Layer Road is a tough place to come to.

"It's always tough playing against 10 men but when it went to 10 versus 10 we felt we had the chance to win it.

"We got back into the game after going 2-1 down and showed good character but we're disappointed with Paul's red card.

"He led with his arm and he caught him but it wasn't intentional.

"We are now undefeated in two games and it's important that we keep that going."

Howard's first penalty had put the visitors ahead midway through the first half, after Gerken had been sent off for tugging back Kayode Odejayi in the area.

But Colchester equalised just before half-time through veteran Teddy Sheringham, who converted George Elokobi's cross.

And things got even better for the hosts early in the second half when Matthew Connolly's effort was deflected in off Barnsley's Rob Kozluk from Jackson's corner.

Reid was then given his marching orders two minutes later for elbowing Sheringham.

Meanwhile Colchester boss Geraint Williams believed the decision by referee Hall to award Barnsley a second penalty was harsh.

"I think it hit Johnnie on the shoulder but we will have to have another look at it," he said.

"We can't change the result but I felt that the players who stayed on the pitch for us were magnificent.

"It was a very eventful game and some of the decisions were a bit dubious but that's football."

The result leaves both clubs still searching for their first victory of the season in the Championship.

Reid led with his arm but it was accidental? I hate it when my arms accidentally lift up
