Who's paying the £16.95 for boxing on Saturday? Not bad card for the night Charles Martin v Anthony Joshua: IBF Heavyweight Title George Groves v David Brophy: 12 Rounds Super-Middleweight Conor Benn v Luke Keleher: 4 Rounds Super-Lightweight TBC Lee Selby v Eric Hunter: IBF World Featherweight Title Jamie McDonnell v Fernando Vargas: WBA Bantamweight Title Matthew Macklin v Brian Rose: 12 Rounds Middleweight Ohara Davies v Andy Keates: Vacant English Lightweight Title
Joke that it's PPV. Joshua & Martin have beaten no one relevant between them. Selby's opponent is trash. Mandatory challenger so it's not his fault but very unlikely to be a good fight. McDonnell isn't a world champion & the opponent is poor & has had about a week's notice. Macklin's shot to pieces. Joshua & Martin will be fun while it lasts but should never be a PPV.
Agreed. Too many boxing events are put on box office. Considering they lost Champions League football, all Australian cricket including the next Ashes over there and a few other things, average cards like this should be on Sky Sports as a good will gesture to customers. Groves is all hype as the semi main event. Only bothered about the main event, but Martin will be knocked out around the halfway point anyway.
He might not have one of the fully legit world titles, but McDonnell is every bit a world champion for me. Never lost his belt in the ring, and should have been unifying when he beat Kameda. Can't believe there was the just odd murmour of unrest when Joshua vs. Whyte was PPV, followed by a lot more for this fight. That last PPV was a joke. Joshua and Martin might not have any big names on their CVs, but a young, undefeated, Olympic medal winning heavyweight fighting for a World Title against a fellow undefeated fighter? A 100% knockout rate vs. an 88% knockout rate? Don't think you can complain on this occasion.
Thing is heavy weight boxing is boring. Its just big blokes leaning and cuddling for half a round. Cant see them coming out first bell like two manic windmills.
Obviously not seen many Joshua, Martin or Wilder fights then? Combined they have a record that stands something like 70 Wins and 66 knockouts. Not much cuddling going on there.
I'm convinced Martin's *****. I've trawled through every bit of available footage of him online and he's fighting overweight old men the majority of time in what look like working mens clubs. He looks awkward, and that left seems to have power in it, but having watched all that footage I can't see anything but a very early KO for AJ. Might not even get past the first three minutes. And I'm not saying that as one of AJ's hype squad. I think he's exciting, I understand the hype actually. But he's proven nothing yet. And beating paper champion Martin won't do that. It will though see him get more praise and media coverage for it, than Fury did when dethroning Wlad. I could well be way out. Martin might well be the new Holyfield or summat. That's why I'll be watching it. But on a dodgy stream because Wembley crippled my wallet.
don't really know to be honest mate. i have an IPTV subscription service, with the full UK HD Sky package. costs me £13/month
I think PPV should be reserved for massive fights. To me cards like this are just pure greed. If Joshua fights Haye, Fury, Wilder, Povetkin or Wlad then fair enough PPV is justified but why should we have to pay £17 just because Martin has a belt due to Fury been stripped & him winning it on an injury in a title fight he should've never been near. Too many of these so called 'stacked' cards are happening & the standard of the regular Sky shows suffer because of it. I agree McDonnell should be a world champion but he isn't & his opponent isn't ranked in the top 15 of any governing body, he deserves better.
I'm the same as you. Looked bang average against journeymen. He looked OK against Glazkov for 2 & a half rounds but Glazkov's not much cop either. We've got a guy gifted a gold medal through dodgy decisions who's never beaten a top 30 fighter fighting another fighter who's only once fought a top 30 fighter & won on an injury. To me if this PPV does well it just makes the bar even lower & the standard of cards will only get worse.
Ive never said they didnt end up in knock outs. I said theres too much cuddling. The last few big ppvs ive watched the undercards were better entertainment.
We just don't know, that's the exciting part of it for me. AJ definitely looks the slicker, more powerful boxer, but if you compare their records there's nothing in it. That doesn't mean they're both world beaters, but it means that on paper alone it's difficult to judge and will be interesting to watch unfold. If AJ gets caught by Martin like he did Dillian Whyte, it'll be lights out. The frustrating thing for me is how much hype AJ received for the Whyte fight. It wouldn't surprise me if we don't see Whyte again. It was a grudge match, nothing else, and just proved you can wind AJ up and draw him in to a fight. Martin looked decent against Glazkov, another undefeated fighter (I think), and I actually think he found a way out with the injury as he just wasn't getting anywhere in those first two rounds. I'm excited for it regardless, and £17 is far cheaper than the initial idea of spending £300 on a weekend in London for it (so soon after Wembley crippled my wallet).
Can't agree with the notion of Glazkov looking for a reason to get out of the fight with Martin. I read somewhere about the Dr's report on the MRI scan saying he'd damaged virtually every ligament in his knee including an ACL tear. He couldn't stand up to the recoil of his own punches let alone to someone punching him.
