Apologies if it's already been posted, but I've been up in the Lake District for the weekend http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/6910740.stm Quite a difference then between a bottom half finish in the Championship and being in League 1. Incidentally, I called in to the Homes of Football yesterday, well worth a visit if you're in the area, picture on display of Bully when we got promoted, and also got a postcard of outside Wembley before the Playoff final, looking down Wembley way toward the stadium (I took one looking the other way from the stadium.)
i think we'd settle for 775k each year more would be good, but this is the sort of news that will make life a lot more bearable for BFC's finances.
13th place 775k , would be a proper result , in fact anything from 4th bottom would be aproper result again...
Solidarity package! League one clubs get £103,480. John Terry could pay that for all the League One clubs from 6 months wages. Which sort of shows the level of their generosity to the lower leagues. Half of one players annual wages. It's a truely generous contribution that says "we are all in this together". I know they don't really have to give anything, but you've got to think with the little clubs taking less and less of a share it's only a matter of time before a few clubs go and don't come back. Boston have had very little coverage since they went out of the league and administration took them down a few more divisions.
Scraps from the top table. Its garbage, and I'd say Mawhinney's reply that it is generous is utter tripe. If it was me in charge, the TV money (including Champions League) would be spread the following ways: Prem 50% Champ 30% CC1 20% CC2 10% That would mean that the big clubs would still have more money, but that there was a way for the smaller clubs to be more upwardly mobile and see a return on any investment.
If that were to happen... Which I think it already is IMHO, then maybe the share of money trickling down in future deals would change again. The Championship is fast becoming a Premiership II with the amount of clubs in it that have spent a fair while in the top flight, there is nothing to say that eventually there will start to be a number of ex-Prem clubs spending more time in League One as well which will raise attendances and therefore see a rise in finances at that level. Overall whilst 3/4 of a million quid might not be a lot to some clubs it is a huge incentive for clubs like Scunny and Blackpool to stay up this year so they can continue to claim a stake in the big money for a further season - and even if they go down it'll be like a mini-parachute payment.
It would never happen though It's like Turkey'svoting for Christmas. The Premier league is a members club and they want to keep as much of the cash for themselves as they can. Trouble is, it's going to kill English football. Look at the last World Cup, Micheal Owen gets injured, and we've no strikers because the top division has all the money and pays for expensive foriegn imports. American sport is (surprsingly) run on a much more socialist style of basis with wage caps and the worst teams getting to choose the best new players. I'm not saying that makes baseball any more watchable, but at least in sports like American football it creates variety and it's not just a few teams that dominate the game all the time. The Premier league is getting dull. I don't think too many people would think I was miles off the mark if I said, the coming season will see ManU and Chelsea battle it out for 1st and 2nd, Liverpool and Aresnal for 3rd and 4th, Tottenham and Everton will be close behind joined by one team who struggled around the lower end last season and will be "pushing for Europe" i.e. 8th this season (Newcastle, boro, or City) but nobody is really interested because all we are talking about is 8th rather than 14th. The newly promoted teams will struggle and be in the mix for relegation along with a surprise packages who did well last season and now aren't that good (possibly Bolton), with the exception of one of (Fulham, Wigan, West Ham - possibly Fulham) they will still be in the relelagtion fight. The title will be decided before Easter leaving the only thing of interest being who gets releagted with Wigan and Derby ... with one team being clearly down by Christmas. In fact the chase for relagation has been the most interesting thing in recent seasons.
You can't blame arsenal and such like for the england manager being short sighted and only looking at players in the premiership though. If they started looking at players that are doing the business in the championship then players wouldnt feel forced to leave to try and get an england place. It's the england manager's bias that is causing all the problems, just look at the likes of crouch, nowhere near england team, signs for liverpool and is called straight up
I can blame Arsenal for not having English players Too much money in the top league and not enough lower down means everyone brings in foregin imports. All the TV money goes to the clubs who spend far too much on wages. Every player around the world knows that there are buckets full of cash in the Premier league so wants in. Successful players in the German, Spanish and Italian leagues are coming to England and there's little room for talented English players. The reason we've signed foreign players in the Championship is because half decent english Championship players have some sort of Premiership experience even if it's just one season by getting promoted from the Champuionship, so we can't afford them because they are looking for Premiership type wages. Therefore we end up looking for second tier foriegn players who are looking to get spotted and end up in the big league ... which means League One players aren't getting the opportunity to step up to Championship standard.
