Just looking at my own PC. It's been behaving strangely for a few weeks ie intermittent shutdowns etc. Anyway, I thought I'd try and repair teh install as I'd had a few Windows error messages up. This I have done, but now the PC is stuck in an endless boot/restart sequence. I think setup crashed and then the screen "restarting setup" appears upon booting. This goes off, a cursor appeasr and then it restarts. I can't get to safe mode or anything. Aany ideas of what I can do to resolve? I've tried redoinbg the repair but no joy Ta
How long does it take before it restarts? I know there was a problem with an upgrade install where it crashed at a specific point (34 minutes to go?) which I resolved by disconnecting all network connections. Dunno if a similar thing might affect a repair.
RE: How long does it take before it restarts? a few minutes. Firstly you see the setup is restarting screen, then the screen goes black with a mouse pointer on it. Then it restarts. I have seen a dialogue box, but it comes and goez too quickly to see what it says. I've also tried disabling auto restart on system failure via F8 but this seems to have no effect.
RE: How long does it take before it restarts? The only answer to this one I fear is a format of the drive and clean new install. What are you using win XP home ,pro or 2000. Have you got a system repair disk ?
RE: How long does it take before it restarts? XP Pro. Yep, I've got the disk. I was hoping to avoid teh wipe, got loads of stuff that's needed on the drive!!
Before you do that - are you sure its not a memory problem? Sounds to me like it could be. If you have more than one memory sim in the PC try removing them and just putting one in the first slot and see if that helps</p>
RE: How long does it take before it restarts? Try switching off, then back on and immediatly start clicking the F8 key. You should get a menu that includes ... When system last worked correctly... try that... if you can get it........
Suggestion from the MS Knowledge Base Windows XP logon screen does not appear and the computer continuously restarts http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310396/en-us
Thanks for the help chaps... I've done all suggested but still get normal xp boot screen followed by setup being restarted screen followed by black screen with pointer followed by restart. I wish I could have a look at the event log without being on that install!!
Is the drive partitioned? If so, you could install XP and a CD recording suite to a different partition so you can back up your wanted documents before the dreaded reformat.
try this fix first I've recently had the same problem,I downloaded the windows setup disks(6 floppies) from Microsoft,on another PC, then restarted with the first disk in 'a' drive,Pc started straight away, although I'd lost Nvidia graphics drivers, and other bits and bobs.Don't reformat till you've tried this fix at least,if you can't get the disks get back to me,I'll be at oakwell on saturday if you can wait that long.
RE: Yep.. If all else fails and you have a dvd or cd writer you can use a linux knoppix disk. This boots from disk and lets you backup your data, settings etc. I've used it on mine and it worked ok. Then you can wipe the f*cker. Partition it too if you re-install.
