On Thursday, my pc started playing up a bit. Whenever I go into "Recent Documents", it starts to list them & gets about half way down before giving me a message saying "Internet Explorer has encountered an unknown problem & needs to shut down" & it then kicks me off the internet but somehow leaves any messengers I have running, open & active. I decided to check to see if I have a virus & ran a full scan overnight on Friday but the results came up clean. I've also run "SpyBot" & removed the spyware that has accumulated since the last time I ran it, but the problem persists. My anti-virus is Norton & I also have a Norton Firewall. Any ideas anybody? :S
The fact that you have Norton installed tells me your system will be unstable. They are horrible pieces of software. Uninstall Norton, download AVG (it's free), then restart. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
ive had norton off and on for years on all O/S with no trouble at all, worth a pop changing to zone alarm just to give it a try
If you right click the start menu and clear the recently opened documents... Does it still cause Internet explorer to shutdown if you navigate to the menu?
If I right click the start button I get a menu with various options but none of which is to clear the recently opened documents
right click the start menu and choose properties then click customise and clear list. and then click on advanced and clear that list too.
Indeed I reckon your next step should be deleting your IE temporary files and running a cleaup disk on each hard drive.
Unfortunately customise isn't 1 of the options. I should have mentioned earlier but I'm not particularly knowledgable about computers. I know how to operate one but struggle when things go wrong!
That'll be a recommendation further down the line But if there's an error or something hiding on his computer, don't you think we should fix it first rather than ignore?
OK Right click the start menu --> Select 'properties' --> Make sure you're on the 'Start Menu' tab --> At the right hand side click the Customise button --> To the right of where it says "To remove records of recently accessed documents programs and websites click clear" click the 'Clear' button. Then repeat what normally causes the error. Is it still happening?
Done that & it appears to have solved it, for now at least. Obviously I'll know better when I have something back in my Recent Documents list. In answer to your other question, it's not a work computer, I'm at home.
RE: Done that If it's the recents docs list that is causing problems, and if you're not that bothered abart it disable it. Follow t' previous procedure, but uncheck the "List my most recently opened documents" at the left side of the "Clear List" button. Computers, don't yer just luv 'em.....
Good, but let's be thorough Open 'My Computer' --> right click your C: drive --> Select 'Properties' --> Click 'Disk Cleanup' to the right of the pie chart --> Check all the boxes in the right hand column EXCEPT 'Compress to save space' --> Click OK. Repeat for any other hard drives.
