The pc we have at home is on it's last legs so I think the time has come to replace it. Question : what is the best (and easiest ) way to save all the photos, music and work files we have stored, onto the new system, when we get it? Is an "easy transfer cable" worth buying? I don't like the idea of messing about for days on end with flash drives. One of the problems we have is that the USB ports on the old pc are starting to fail, so I need to sort this before they all conk out. Also, any good deals on desktop pcs? My other half doesn't like laptops, so we want something that we can store the music library on, photos, and work documents ...mainly word/ excel stuff. No need for it to be geared up for games as we have other stuff for that. Any tips? Cheers in advance.
If they're saved on the hard drive Fi, just take that and insert it into new one. Windows should detect it and then you pull all files from one to other. That's how I did mine. Failing that, burn a DVD. Dell always offer good deals. Good customer service too, unlike PC World, Currys et al.
Ok, cheers.... Probably most of the stuff on the hard drive can go, there's documents on there from six or seven years ago, so it's only the recent stuff we need. But I'll try, once we get a new one. What kind of memory do we need. We have about 5,000 tracks on iTunes, plus about 1,000 photos. Keep getting offers from Dell at work so might have another look.
As for hard drive size - 1 TB seems to be fairly standard that's 1024 GB - more than enough. Memory seems to be about 6GB now but you can easily update this in the future
How do you back up the files? Serious question as if your hard drive dies you could lose everything A good solution to consider for transfer and also back up is a large USB disk - they are really quite cheap these days Something like this - though there are cheaper versions around http://www.amazon.co.uk/Buffalo-Dri...nal-Drive/dp/B004LFLCFC/ref=pd_cp_computers_0 would be a good idea - then you copy everything off your old PC onto this - and then you can copy it back onto your new one but also keep it to back up any new files to As said above Dell are a fairly safe bet for a new PC
Re: How do you back up the files? Portable hard drives are fairly cheap as well - easy to use and you've got a back up just in case. I've found out the hard way what it's like when hard drive goes
If you haven't got much data then try something like Dropbox -> Allows you to sync a folder onto the Internet and back onto the new PC. 2GB is free, and 100GB is $19.99 per month and you might get away with one month.
http://www.box.com/personal/ is 5gb of free storage. Managed to get a free upgrade before Christmas to 50gb (FREE) But if you haven't already, you need to back them all up to CD / DVD. Lost count of how many people I know for years have put all their digi pics on their computer and never backed up. Then come crying when the HDD finally gives up on them.
Re: How do you back up the files? It's set to back up every week. Don't know how it does it right enough. Going to make a start tonight with saving the photos. Problem is it's the USB ports that are dying. We did have about 8 but at least four don't work.
Shut up you big girl. I've managed nicely enough with a pc for the last ten years. It does everything I need it to and lots more that I don't understand.
I bought a portable hard drive when I replaced my PC a few years back, costs have really come down since then as well. I just got a small capacity one to put what I wanted onto it to transfer across and I use it to back up my photos etc.
