Mate of mine's PC has been booting up as normal, but as soon as everything settles down the screen goes blank and "goes to sleep" PC is lit up and switched on.

Nothing can be done apart from turn PC off and switch on again and start booting up from scratch. Sometimes it does it again, and again, then seems to settle down. Does not do it every time on start up but it is becoming more frequent.

Is this likely to be a screen problem or a PC problem? If it's PC does anybody know the probable cause - and more importantly could he be heading to a PC failure, in which case he could lose anything not backed up?

    Cheers in advance.

    Overheating?

Is the fan working and clear of obstructions? Mine collect cat furlike they're preparing for the next ice age. Once it's booted without going to sleep, does it ever subsequently go to sleep or are you then OK until the next time you reboot?

    RE: Overheating?

Mostly yes. Straight after boot up or less than a minute in. Just once or twice it's happened about fifteen minutes in.

Boot up in safe mode., check that all the drivers are installed correctly specially the graphics driver, or at this point you could even delete the graphics for a fresh install just as a cover.

Do a scan for virus and spyware.

Get some canned air and give the fan on the processor and any inlet fans a blow,,,,,,,,,,,through,, was going to say job then but thpough better of it ;)

If all else fails boot again in safemode and take the system back to a date you knew it was working,
