It won't work like that You can't just go from the line out of the record player to the sound card. You will either need to use an amp and then connect to the pc from that, or get a dj mixer and use in the same way - this would probably be cheaper.
or a phono stage (pre-amp) It appears you can buy them for £20 upwards. On second thoughts, this will only work if you can say plug in a CD player straight into the line in.
RE: or a phono stage (pre-amp) I got a record player from a mate the other day, just the single deck, and plugged it into the cd hi-fi player my other mate gave me. Problem is, it's rather quiet compared to when it's plugged into my dad's old system (although only one speaker works on that!)
So, for the new smaller hi-fi, to increase volume, do I just need a pre-amp?
I would rather use my dad's system - much better quality - but I'm dubious about getting the sound issue solved, as it must be wiring rather than the actual speaker.
Any thoughts pal?

Apparently Phono output is much lower than outputs from modern machines (CD players etc.) so modern amplifiers which are usually not designed to take a record player need a phono stage or pre-amp. Something like this should sort you out. Cambridge Audio have a fairly good reputation. http://www.froogle.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=CAMB-540P-SIL
