    Is this still a thing?

25 years ago a pc was nearly obsolete a year later and the need to upgrade was more a necessity rather than a choice, can’t see the need now

I think they are severely underfunded and there aren’t enough bobbies on the beat.
I also don’t think they look as menacing now they don’t wear them funny shaped helmets.

I've been thinking about upgrading my Babbage Analytical Engine, but it still seems to perform OK.

I don't have a PC. MacBook Pro for me. Not sure how they compare these days TBH. Have used Mac for music, be it DJing & production work & business apps too long, I can't be bothered swapping back now. I don't play games on it, but it works well for everything I need, but probably overpriced at over £2k, but I use it about 8 hours a day usually, so over an average 3 year lifespan that is still peanuts & is paid through my DJ business.

Can’t help thinking back to the early days of Windows PCs, when it wasn’t common to have one in the office and very uncommon at home. Between 1990-93 I was at HQ RAF Germany, Rheindahlen and it was my job to read and act on bids for a PC from different RAF units in Germany. The most likely one they would get was an Olivetti with a 20mb hard drive which was quite enough storage at that time for anybody! If they were REALLY lucky they got a 30mb Apricot and that really was the business. Apple Macs were just appearing on some MOD desks and we had a couple of mono screened ones with a display size of about 9 inches.

The progress in IT is astonishing and, of course, any new model is a “must have”, if you can afford it.

My main one, which I thought was quite good, doesn't even run Windows 11, and I'm doing some photo editing which is taking time. I hope I can keep this working well for some years to come.

My laptop is desperate for more RAM, but you have to take it apart to upgrade, and I'll never get it back together again.

M1 Mac mini. Base model with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Was <£500 with an education discount.

It’ll probably be another ten years until I feel the need to upgrade it.
