More debate after Saturday, but the real issue is not that we occasionally concede them, because every team does, but that we seldom win them. I am convinced that teams must practice the dark art of winning penalties and I am not convinced that we do, or don't do it enough. A lot of penalties are 'won,' in other words the attacking player makes sure that he gives the referee at least a decision to make. I am not saying that we should cheat, but there clearly are ways of winning them and we seldom do. I think that is the difference between us and other teams. It is sort of - make sure that you do trip up over the defender's trailing leg, rather than avoiding it. I did wonder if the Orient forward blasted the ball deliberately at McCart in the hope that it would hit his hand and he could claim a penalty. Probably not, but you see what I mean. I am sure that Jon Stead 'won' a few in his time as a striker. He should be a good source of knowledge and he did talk about dark arts when he arrived. Let's not cheat, of course, but there are ways and means.
We had a shout at home follwing a shot from our striker against a defender deemed natural - despite it being a much less explosive shot to the one yesterday. No pen. Yet any shout against us given instantly.
Don't think it's dark arts -- James Norwood was the master of the dark arts and he got nothing. We've had some blatant penalties not given and I'm not sure what the answer is. The one at Burton last year is the one that sticks out for me ...
It's a though our obsession with raising the issue. Rubs up on refs. Fear of giving us one as it might seem we are due one. rather than nailed on. Some decisions that go against us, (penalties for the opposition) or not for us.(blatant penalties for us) are staggeringly bad.
I'm not sure that most refs will know how long it is since we've had a penalty. With regards to the other point, agree completely. Some of the pens we've conceded have been completely justified. I've got very few complaints about the Portsmouth and Blackpool awards recently. However, most borderline decisions are also going against us (with the exception of Cambridge away), coupled with absolutely nothing being given in our favour, either borderline in the case of the Blackpool handball, or absolutely blatant like at Wembley. It's gone way beyond an oddity now. It's absolutely inexplicable.
The 2 I really cant get my head around are the Wembley one where VAR should have spotted the clear foul on Kitching and the magnificent save at Burton last year they are both hard to explain away I agree all decisions to aware penalties to opponents in our box dont always go against us and there are some that could have been given that arent but the never giving us one ( except one time when we were already 4-0 up to the bottom side) is really hard to explain Saturdays in isolation against us just looks a harsh - seen them given - one. I still think it was wrong as I am sure it bounced off McCarts leg onto his arm but the fact that we cant agree after replays means I can accept the ref genuinely thought it was straight to his arm, but its not that we only get some of those - we never get them. The blocked shot from Kane clearly stopped by an arm against Burton recently was a clearer penalty but we didnt get it - because we never do, In the same game a defender controlled a bouncing ball with his arm - hard to see why that one wasnt given - Im sure he didnt do it on purpose but very few handballs in the area that result in penaties are actually deliberate ( goal line saves apart) Most clear penalties in our own box are given along with a few of the -gave a ref a decision to make ones" we just dont get them not the gave the ref a decision ones or even the clear cut stone wall ones and its starting to look as though there must be a reason for it - it cant just be bad luck over such a long period
We need to get into the box to win them. Also some of our players throw themselves to the floor at with the slightest of touches on occasions. So if and when we are really fouled in the box the ref waves it away.
Yes, think so. Which I'm not too worried about, as we generally did ok from the spot against Tranmere earlier in the season. To be honest I'm not expecting it to go to penalties against Horsham but you never know.
I think the main reason we haven't had penalties last couple of seasons is we have been better in front of goal and have been shooting more from outside the box.
