I am a bit confused by that - I thought the Police had their own pension scheme into which they contributed so the money for pensions came from that scheme. I am sure that Bettson will have been contributing throughout his career so now will be able to withdraw funds like any other officer - maybe someone who actually knows how it works can explain.

that may be correct (and it is, as I understand it) but it must have been will hell of a salary / contribution to reap £83k a year back.

Fill your boots Betto! £83,000 a year! Luvly Jubbly. I spoke to a copper not long ago and he outlined their pension scheme as follows. The average copper works about 30 years retiring at 50 so that is 30 years worth of contributions. They pay in 11% of their salary each year with the state (taxpayer) matching that contribution, another 11%. In Bettos early career as an ordinary plod in the 1970s/80s this would have been a small amount but it gradually increased as he climbed the career ladder and wages went up generally. As with most public sector pensions the amount received on retirement is based on their final salary, in Bettos case as a very well paid Chief Constable. The idea is that their pension is actually paid from the 11%s that coppers are putting in now but with police cuts lowering the number paying in there will be an increasing shortfall in the fund held to pay pensions. This shortfall is paid by the taxpayer. So Betto has gained twice from the taxpayer, from matching contributions throughout his career and then from the taxpayer making up the fund shortfall. He does pay tax on his earnings and on his pension so he will not get the whole £83K but I am sure he will be comfortable. He does,of course also receive a normal State pension when he is 65 so I dont think he will be choosing between heating and eating. I am quite happy to be corrected on the detail but I think this is the general outline. If Betto is convicted of perverting the course of justice in the Hillsborough cover up he will probably lose part or all of his pension. Fill your boots while you can Betto!

And your point is? My dad Snap Tin took an Open University degree after retiring from mining and always encouraged education in the family.Or all you saying that all mining families are thick?

no not at all i'm an ex miner myself from a long and large line of miners.
my point is when you started posting your posts seemed quite simple and down to earth with the forgiveable spelling mistakes. (must state i'm not perfect on that score myself.
then as your getting more complaceant with your posts the level seems to have gone up dramatically.
i could be wrong and if so apologise but we have had the pleasure of shall we say controversial posters on here who seem to "leave" and then come back as someone else and its a bit confusing especially as your posts seem totally different to when you started.

Shouldnt really need to justify myself as its only a message board for Barnsley fans, not a parliamentary inquiry. Unfortunately the facts get in the way of your argument. Originally my dad started posting on here,an old but intelligent miner, but I did most of the typing because he wasnt really up to IT keyboard skills. You try typing when someone else is speaking and get everything perfect. He finally stopped because he didnt like the level of bad language on a site which was read by kids. I applied through your administrators to take over his account (no secrecy or deception) on this forum. I have never said I was a miner (I am not) but I am proud to be the son of two generations of miners.I have not "pretended" to get spellings wrong as I would regard that as very patronising to miners(including my dad). I really cant see what your problem is. There may well be contributors on here who hide behind keyboards pretending to be someone else but I am Snap Tins Lad and proud of it. I still cannot understand why I should be disrespected for submitting a post that wasnt full of swearing etc. I was replying to a question earlier in the thread about police pensions.Thank you to those who wished my dad well in his recent illness. He is a lot better now. Thanks.

your post does now seem to have reverted to your usual on this occasion and the sympathy bit is good ,ok i'll leave it there as i'm still unsure but you and jam man seem to log out when other is posting, just compare your post on the coppers pension to this post.

I resent the "sympathy" part of your reply. I hope your family is in good health. Sorry mate, you have got it wrong. I have better things to do than pretending to be this jam man. I really dont worry about whether you are "convinced" or not. Have a nice evening.
