Did anyone else think he had a square head? We used to think he resembled that Odd-Job bloke from one of the Carry On films. Mind you, Mick McCarthy also earned the title 'Bunghead' (dunno)

Macca could head the ball further than anyone I've ever seen!

It's the shape of the head you know? :D mind you, Ian Evans was quite handy in the air too -- we had a decent pair of lads in the central defnec back in those days didn't we?

    Decent defence that one!

    (Y) Chambers had his moments but was steady , Bobby Horn in goal, Joyce right back , one with the funny head and the Welsh one! Simple 4-4-2

Memory is hazy on this one...... but did Neil Cooper stand in on occasion in defence? We signed him from Aberdeen for £35,000.

That Gordon Boyd hardly got a look in......... Whilst on about comparisons - Martin New, Bobby Horn or Gary Pierce?

    They were all good keepers

Didn't New and Horn look a like - I thought they were one and the same person! Remember we had Jake Findlay on loan as well - he was a great keeper too!

As for Cooper not that sure to be honest - I thought he was more a midfielder - old age has affected my memory!

    Horn and New.....

You're right! They were very similar indeed. I can recall us signing Gary Pierce and thinking "****!" cos he was the Wolves goalie with a lot of respect, etc. That was pre-season 79/80. With regards to Horn and New...... i'll be buggared if i can recall when we signed them etc. The mists of time has ensured such an outlook methinks..... but New came before Horn (ooo matron - cue sexual anectdotes)

With regards Neil Cooper, i reckon you could be right, but for some reason i can also recall him filling in in defence on occasion. One thing that is sadly missing from that era is the atmosphere.

It was a great time to start watching Barnsley

First started going in 78 - the atmosphere at the Grimsby game was amazing - 20,000 + for a 4th division game! The team was very entertaining as well with great playes all over the pitch! Ah ... the good old days! :D

    The Grimsby game.....

A Saunders header, and Derke Bell slipping the ball pas an advancing nigel Batch. The celebrations were the best i can personally remember, although maybe the rose tinted spectacles are on (?). Having said that, i'd seen us win promotion having been brought up on the offers of Jim Iley and a limited board....... and i still reckon there was more than 21,000 in Oakwell for that evening. Grimsby had a good following on the Spion Kop and i stood in all three parts of the ground throughout that game and wherever me and my mate went it was bloody packed solid.

That was also the day i packed in selling programmes for the club as i'd been threatened by some drunken **** from Grimsby early doors and i wasn't prepared to miss most of the game like we did for the Hereford match due to whoever counting up the sales etc.

My recolection of Neil Cooper is more at fullback or centre half. Don't remember him playing much in midfield.
