after the 'drop-my-phone-into-my-cup-of-tea' incident, I'm still using my old 8310.

I've just found a nokia 2650 that I like for £25 but it's on orange, and I'm on Vodafone - is it expensive to get it unlocked?? and where's best to take it.. any ideas??

easy and free with a code

try turning it on (without a sim in) and typing in

    #pw+416 727 331 334 413+7#

the phone should then reboot and come back on. if it does then u should be able to use any sim

and do you need to leave the gaps between the numbers like you typed there??

    416 727 rather than 416727

As I understand it, codes are IMEI-specific.  An unlock code has to be generated for your phone, for which the IMEI number is needed.

You do seem to be able to get codes cheaply online, though, on the sites others have linked.

    Of course they are! ffs

Type the above code in and you will hear a voice shout "strike 1"! By strike 5 your phone becomes a novelty paperweight.

I don't know exactly how they are calculated, but they must be some mathematical function of the IMEI number. The website services always describe themselves as "generators" suggesting that they calculate the code required using the IMEI & presumably some function of a number/coding representing the network they are locked to (as opposed to delving into some infinite database of codes).
