Always rated Mike Lester. I'll never forget the goal he scored when we beat Wednesday 2-0 at their place (sublime through ball from Ronnie). I think he was moved on when Ray McHale signed.
From the Mike Flynn interview... Question: Do you have any regrets? Answer: The other thing I wouldn't have done is sign for Barnsley. The fans were horrible. Strange people. Funny town. I wouldn't have gone there. Everything else I wouldn't change. Funnily enough a lot of fans regret you signing too. http://mytimeinfootball.com/Mike_Flynn
Excellent, cheers. He's thinner now then when he used to play. Really good to read him pick the goal at 'boro as his favourite goal. It's one of my favourite too. You can't beat the noise when you score a goal with an away following that big. That one is particularly special for me. It was one of my first away matches. The goal came from a short corner and just before Mike rifled it home my dad said, "bloody, stupid short corners." Almost 35 years later and I'm still upset we didn't win the game. "What's it like to be outclassed!"
When Mike was interviewed after the boro defeat he was asked can boro win the cup.He replied yes,if they can beat us they can win anybody.
12,000 out of 37,557. Yep, it were a top class goal and we shudda won. Bosco Jancovic got one of theirs.
I remember going to Boro away when we lost and Lester scored his 25yarder. We were behind the goal with Boro fans sat behind us. I was only 9 and couldn't see so my dad sat me on the wall separating the fans. I recall the Bus broke down on way home. The adults had to push the bus down the road where we found a pub and phone. We finally got the bus going when police pulled is over asking if we'd seen any football fans pushing a bus down the duel carriageway haha
Sounds a bit like my memories of the game. I was 10 or 11 and me and my dad were right at the back in the corner. My dad sat me on his shoulders for the first half, but was clearly struggling, not being a big bloke, so this bloke at the side of us offered to help and I spent the second half being passed from shoulders to shoulders. On the way home the car in front of us must have flicked a stone up because it broke our windscreen. We had to pull over on to the hard shoulder and remove all the glass. Then we drove all the way home with no windscreen. It was ruddy freezing. My dad's mate was driving, so me and my dad were huddled on the back seat trying to get warm. The traffic was chocka, but there was a commotion and this car full of Exeter fans came winding through, really excited cos they'd got a draw at Newcastle. I may be exaggerating but it seemed like there were a dozen people hanging out of that car. Anyway, as we'd been slowed down by having to remove all the glass, the team coach caught up with us and was alongside us in the next lane. Mike Lester noticed our windscreen and pointed us out to whoever was sat next to him, so I waved my scarf at him and he gave me the thumbs up. Warmed me up for the rest of the journey!
His first goal at Oakwell was if I remember right for Grimsby when we won promotion from the 4th Division in 79 in front of 21,000 fans. We signed him for the following season. I was at the Boro game and his was a sweet strike. He also scored a lovely goal at Plymouth that season. I remember it as a 35 yarder but youtube shows it as about 20.
