Following on from the other thread of scapegoats through the years, which players do you reckon got off pretty easy, and were liked by the fans even though not being the best? I'll start with Carl Dickinson.. couple of bangs on the chest and Barnsley fans seemed to love him, despite him not being all that good of a LB.
Shows how little I know As I rated both Dickinson & Taggart highly, especially Taggart. If I'd to name one player, it'd have to be Chris Morgan. I could never understand why he got the adulation, and Player Of The Year award, he did. Opinions and all that.
Re: Shows how little I know Morgan was all right in the air or comitted tackling, found wanting in many areas. Taggart is just an unreal pick in this thread. He was superb for us, I went to his debut in the reserves and just thought, we've got a beast of a laiker
For a couple of posters on here It is anyone that plays right back before Hassell, does not matter if they any good or not, they just need to be in the same position as Hassell.
Re: Shows how little I know Gerry Taggart was one of my all-time favourites. It's amazing just how varied opinions can be in football.
Hassell - I like him but his adulation does seem to go back to that clearance against Wednesday off the line. Before that he was a decent player for us but never rated in League One, battered when played central midfield by Davey etc. Ryan Shotton - good young player but never saw the player some did. Good shout with Shackell Ferenczi - never did it for me but again people adored him.
Easy-John Kelly-Jimmy Baxter-Gavin Smith- George Robledo-Danny Blachflower-Arther Kaye-Cec McCormack-Tommy Taylor-Eric Winstanley-Duncan Sharp- Neil Redfearn Ronnie Glavin-Ashley Ward. I'm sure I've forgotten some.
Werling - the fact he had a rocket of a left foot hid his defensive frailties! Woeful. Had a shocker at Hillsborough one season I seem to remember.
maybe o I misunderstood the question, thought said players who good do no wrong Taggart was a great player who even on a bad day could be forgiven
Re: Shows how little I know Player of the Year? Didn't he also win Player of the Millenium? I'll echo the nominations for Devaney, who was okay, but the idea that people still think he could do a job for us now is baffling. And I'll submit Georgi Hristov, who has far more fans than he ever deserved. And, not a player, but Andy Ritchie seems to to get overly praised (although I do agree that the club were awful in denying him the Wednesday job only to sack him a few weeks later). Anyone who was at the Palace away match just before he got sacked will know that it was the first time the away end had their belts and shoelaces taken from them at half time.
