.... 10 years ago today, firefighters from the FDNY entered the WTC buildings to save the lives of those trapped inside. In doing so, 343 lost their lives, along with others from the emergency services trying to help. Tonight I raise a glass in their memories. All Give Some, Some Gave All. 343 - Never Forget.
Well said, they should never be forgotten. The brave men and women of the emergency services gave their lives trying to save the lives of others; there is no greater sacrifice. RIP to all who lost their life.
Without wishing to be disrespectful to the 343 firefighters who died I'd like to say that they (in my opinion) were (generalising a little here) no braver than the hundreds of firefighters who luckily escaped with their lives after going in to help people. Any one of them could have died and on the whole it was nothing but luck or a lack of it that caused some to die while some survived. I also think that the police officers, medical personel and the many 'ordinary' civilians who went into those towers to try to save people should be recognised. 343 firefighters died trying to save people but there were also many civilians who went into the towers (or stayed in them) trying to save others and a lot of those lost their lives as well. In my opinion just as brave as the firefighters, maybe even more so as they didn't have to do what they did. As I said that isn't taking anything away from the 343 that are often mentioned but I think the efforts and sacrifice of other people is important to be remembered as well. I guess i'm just not really very keen on numbers that put one group of peoples efforts above another.
Re: Without wishing to be disrespectful to the 343 firefighters who died I agree with you ST and that's why I put RIP to all who lost their life. There were many ordinary Joe's who tried to help and also lost their life. Luckily you dont have to lose your life to be brave, there is no doubting that many very brave men and women didn't die that day sadly however we have just passed an anniversary of remembrance for the thousands who did die.
Re: Without wishing to be disrespectful to the 343 firefighters who died Agree with that. As I said I wasn't saying that those who died or specifically the firefighters were any less deserving of being honoured.
