Highlight so far, one of Johnsons own backbenches question... 'Are there any circumstances in which the prime minister would resign?' Savage..Made me chuickle did that. Blackford calls for a General Election just can't see Johnson or whoever is in position next calling a snap election, they'll want to push all this behind them and find some tax bribes to announce closer to the full term election..
Quote of the afternoon by Starmer calling the PM and his cabinet the ‘Charge of the light weight Brigade’
Another great quote from Sajid Jarvid ‘ I came into politics to do something not to be somebody’ Great quote even if you don’t believe it in him
It's no longer in the gift of the PM to call an election on a whim due to the parliament act. It needs two thirds of the house to vote for one. I don't see the tories on the back benches being up for voting for an election right now.
The 1922 committee can call on another vote of no confidence cant they despite there being one recently.
Not since the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022. The right to call an election rests with the royal prerogative, which is exercisable by the prime minister.
They would need to adjust their own rules 1st to do so. Effectively removing the time limit between no confidence votes.
That just reminded me. Question Time is from Barnsley this week. I wonder how many plants there will be?
If it’s owt like last time plenty of Tory ‘plants’ . On Fiona Bruce’s own admissions the audience’s have been dominated by Tory voters
He's seriously got think about calling it a day now. Even his best mate Gove has told him to resign. One maybe 2 more resignations from the cabinet and its game over. All this before they even start the big parliamentary review of partygate by the mps themselves. If he gets to summer recess in 2 weeks I'll be amazed. But then again it's Boris.
He's a malignant narcissist. If a gambit has 0.1% of ending with him as PM and a 99.9% chance of failing and destroying the party in the process he'll still go for it rather than step down. I wouldn't discount him calling a hail mary general election to try and secure a mandate from the public in order to force the party into line.
Just what we all need a Thursday all nighter. Could kill 2 birds with one stone give the jocks the unofficial inderef as well. It'll shut jimmy krankie up for a while afterwards.
Sorry but they repealed the Fixed term Parliament act last year, the PM can call an election whenever he likes. Edit, the act wasn't repealed but watered down so that a simple majority could result in an election; which of course any PM (in normal times) could rely on winning.
Aah, I stand corrected then. But even if it needs a simple majority, are the Tories going to vote for that?
That's what I've been thinking but he has been threatening to call a snap election for weeks now to try and keep the party in line so there must be some mechanism.
He's sacked Gove and there have now been 42 resignations, it's been quite a busy day for a walking dead man....
