I've said before, the problem Don has is that he has been set a goal of breaking even by our esteemed (and absent) Chairman, but he doesn't have the clout to make any important decisions. Puts him in an impossible position really.
Went right off him when he tried to justify the Liverpool ticket fiasco by saying we only took 500 to Middlesbrough for a League Cup Round 1 match on a Tuesday night, "How was I supposed to know there'd be such a demand?" or words to that effect instead of admitting he ballsed it. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of Barsnley FC would have known there would be huge demand for that game. Also went off him even more when he refused a charity request for a couple of tickets saying he gets inundated with them and can't help everyone. Sheff United, Sheff Wed, Rotherham and Sheffield Steelers all contributed but he just wasted the opportunity with a curt response which basically said no chance. He also tries to do the Marketing on his own when he's not qualified or cut out for it.
Decent fella. I wouldn't say he's doing what Cryne tells him though. I'm led to believe that Cryne has pretty much let Don and Barry run the show as they see fit, but without any financial help. So I'd suggest he's doing his best with what he's got. Whether that 'best' is good enough for a second tier club is the question....
I have it on authority, from a BFC employee, that as I said previously, Don and Barry run the show, make the decisions, and Cryne wants it that way. The only thing to change in recent times is the capacity to call on Patrick for extra funding. Hence the prices, player sales, budget cuts. Don is not just 'following orders'.
You're right on that, obviously. Whilst Don and Barry run the club, Patrick is still the head figure and as such can interfere if need be. But I'm afraid those who suggest that Don is merely 'following orders' are very wrong.
He's been given a target - to break even. He's doing that. Anything else requires a change in strategy. He doesn't set that, his gaffer does.
