Given the extent of de-population of South Yorkshire since 1984 (and all that..)

Does any one know the relative figures for gates at Oakwell?

As a percent have the crowd figures changed more or less than local population?

Population decline in Barnsley is negligible

It only declined by 8,000 from 1971 to 2001. That's a loss of 3.5%. There are far more important factors than that such as which league we are in, how well we're playing, the miners strike etc. I would imagine average attendances are very simialr now to what they were in 84 despite us being in a lower division. They're higher now than they were for much of the mid to late eighties and early 90s. Why have I answered this question?

"The population of the Barnsley area grew rapidly between 1850 and 1940 as the coal mining industry expanded. Between 1900 and 1930, the population living within the present Borough boundary increased by 45%. Population growth slowed after 1945 and Barnsley reached a peak of 226,350 in 1971. The population then declined gradually to 223,200 in 1991 and 218,100 in 2001. The population density of the Borough is 6.64 persons per hectare or 1,796 per square mile."

    What about outlying area?

My understanding was that places like Wath have halved their population since 1984.

While I take your point about what division we are in etc,

none of my school friend now live in South Yorkshire and many family members have also left - it must have some effect.

But its also a pool of ex-pat supporters that the club could sell other products to.
Look at the list of names on here!

    The population given

is for the Barnsley borough not the town centre. The borough is huge encompassing all the outlying areas. I guess it does have an effect, but like I said, the average attendances we get now are larger than for much of the 80s and 90s.

But the club should be selling products to those living further a field. I think it's shocking that in this day and age we have neither an online shop or a means to buy tickets on the official site. I'm absolutely certain that a Barnsley fan with that knowledge could set up such a venture for free in a couple of days if the club are struggling.

    Really?

''I'm absolutely certain that a Barnsley fan with that knowledge could set up such a venture for free in a couple of days if the club are struggling.''

    Not true.

To set up such things requires black magic, tooth of frog, tail of bat, tongue of jellyfish & a small aubergine.

    You don't understand these things.
    So shut it.

I didn't want to say on here, but ...

... it's because I love you & I can't bear the thought of being without you.

    I'm leaving now, Mum.

I'm surprised you're not tucked up in bed after those 3 pints.
    Sick everywhere.

Barnsley is a slowly dying town........although if we get a decent team........but Donny

we could still get 15 to 25 thou per match
Donny on the other hand is a town that is booming hence population the size of Barnsley has now increased to 300k. Although in saying this, Donny is a dumping ground of immigrants - straight off the east coast main line
