Derby County are ready to rival Championship rivals Cardiff City for the signature of Motherwell striker Chris Porter.

The in-demand 25-year-old is keen on a move back to England but has stalled on a switch to Ninian Park, despite Dave Jones' side having agreed a £425,000 deal with Motherwell.

Porter was due in Cardiff on Thursday to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical but reportedly had second thoughts upon hearing of Derby's possible interest.

Rams chairman Adam Pearson has now confirmed his club are ready to enter the bidding for Porter's services.

He told the Scottish Daily Express: "Chris Porter is a player Nigel Clough likes and we are aware of his situation.

"He is a player the club would be interested in signing."

Cardiff, who were of the belief the deal was a formality, have no intention of missing out on alternative targets while Porter ponders his future.

"We have made a bid which has been accepted by the club and Mark (McGhee) has to talk to him as well," Bluebirds chairman Peter Ridsdale told the Daily Record.

"We have targeted five players and we expect to get one or two of them. We have made progress on one and have given that person a day to make a decision.

"Failing that, we move on to hitting the next target."

According to rumours, Porters missus is doing a degree at Nottingham Uni & he had second thoughts then when Derby came in for him.

We've already moved on to the next target by the looks of it as SSN are saying we've bid £1.6m for Tommy Smith of Watford
