BARNSLEY manager Andy Ritchie gave his thoughts after a hard-fought victory against Yeovil Town. He said: "I was very pleased by the grit and determination we showed out there and I think that everybody could see that every one of the players worked their socks out to get a win. At the end of the day it is three points that we needed at this stage of the season and you cannot play purest football all the time. "I think overall we just edged it really even though Yeovil had a purple patch for 20 minutes after the break. I was looking for the players to stand up and be men out there and I felt we put in a great defensive display in regards to getting our heads on things. Barry Conlon was excellent in that respect and I felt that our two central defenders we strong against a difficult Yeovil attack. "We now want to see that grit and determination every week. "It was looking as though the game would end as a stalemate even though their goalkeeper made two or three great saves in the second half. The one he tipped onto the post was outstanding. "We were fortunate to get the penalty because from where I was standing it did not look like a foul and I told Gary Johnson that after the game. Having said that I felt the challenge on Barry Conlon a few minutes later was a blatant penalty and the referee gave nothing. It is swings and roundabouts really. "We showed grit and determination to grind out a result and the lads showed that they would never give in. That is a good base to build from and I am sure the fluency will come. We had spells through the game where we brought the ball down and played but it was a little sporadic. We were workmanlike and dogged and sometimes you have to be like that to win games. "I would have loved to have played better football but at the end of the day it was all about getting three points. We did that and we have not fallen further behind in the table so it is something we can build on".
RE: worked there socks off ye reight rithcie Well at least i know how poor we must have been at Colchester.
IMO.. He's right about the workrate being there, I don't think that was the problem. Problems were caused by Conlon being so ineffective that Hayes was practically upfront alone until his knock, and a spell for 15 minutes where they got on top. Despite being totally unable to inspire his defence, Colgan kept a clean sheet. People can criticise the defence all they want..but 4 games, 3 goals conceded. The problem is not scoring when we're on top of games- but we showed character to battle through a tough spell of pressure. Oh, and based on that performance, I'm glad we didn't sign Phil Jevons.
with talk like that theres no wonder nobody has faith in him worked their socks off? edged it? a yeovil purple patch of 20 minutes? yeah right. even his biggest fans were saying how unbelievably **** we were today. you take the cheap option in a manager and you get crap
of course work rate was a problem conlon was walking around and mcphail was stood on the centre circle watching the scoreboard to find out how leeds were doing
