POST MATCH REACTION FROM THE ALEXANDRA STADIUM Posted on: Tue 12 Aug 2008 REDS boss Simon Davey gave his thoughts following tonight's Carling Cup shock at Crewe Alexandra. Simon said: "We are very disappointed tonight. We had enough chances to finish three games but if you don't take them then you get punished. That was not good enough. We have to take those chances. "I have no doubts about the penalties. They were both penalties and to go out at this stage is a disaster. "We did not play well in the first half but were better and there was only one team in it after the break. The damage was done in that first half really and we should have put our chances away. "If you have to take a positive from the game then you can look at Diego Leon's performance but that was the one thing really. "We are looking forward now and want to put this behind us with all three points on Saturday. This is a disaster and we are all very disappointed. We had a lot of fans here tonight and we are all disappointed for them".
So in summary... We play some decent stuff but we still can't score and our defence is still rubbish. I shall wait till I see the Coventry game to make my mind up how worried I am.
hope this isn't a continuation of last year's poor away-form, but too early to tell Probably won't know for a few weeks, to allow for luck & different opposition standards to even out. The most discernable pattern so far - apart from losing after 90 mins - is Davey saying "there was only one team in it after half time" after both matches. Hopefully those who said that pre-season matches were solely for fitness can now see some continuation of fortunes into the first competitive matches. I'd have to see that debate again next year!
You'll wait for your first game of the season on whether you can slag em off or not? Great that is. The team will be missing 2 key players who any team in the division would miss, but you'll still make your judgement then. I await with baited breath.
Well Steele's not been at fault... So it's only De Silva missing. Maybe a loan player could have been signed? I only said it will help me make my mind up, I didn't say I'll start saying we're relegated! Are you expecting a defeat then?
RE: I'd rather admit problems and fix em ...than bury my head in the sand & pretend all is well. Come match day tho, we should all help out the lads on the field. Why do you assume we want to slag the team off?
I just find it.... ... tremendously fickle that you are going to base how worried you are on your first game of a 46 game season. Whether you are a rose tinted fan or not the season we have will not be based on this saturday's game.
Why is Davey's comments completely different to Sky Sports News.. their commentator at the game said we were terrible apart from a few chances from Leon and it was a comfortable night for Crewe, yet Davey comes out and says we should have won?????? Does he watch the same game the stupid blinkered lovely person. Out by Xmas at this rate.
I know, reading through the posts. Sky said we weren't even in it til the end... even commented on how we had not come close to a shot in the first half. This was a view from a neutral.
We had lots of possession but.. only on leon's freefick did we trouble the keeper. Steele only had to be alert and pick ball out of net twice. For me for all the possesion we were very poor. our tactic was either to put it back to the CB's who hoofed the ball up frount or to get it wide and cross, only problem was who the hell was big enough to attack the headers. Needed more on ground.
Still like last season then.... where they humped it up to Mostto all the time when he was making runs and needing it on the floor. Maybe when De Silva is back the ball will come through the midfield much better. Why cant we just get it down on the floor and start playing football again? We have players that are capable.
No we didn't, we hardly tested the keeper. I agree. Where have we heard that before? But if he'd been in the middle instead of Hassell then we would have won. You're disappointed for us? Well why didn't you perform then. None of the players come and applauded the fans at the end the set of tossers.
RE: I know, reading through the posts. Sky said we weren't even in it til the end... That's not totally true. We had a few decent shots in first half TBF.
It's not fickle, and I am as far away from a fickle fan as you'll get My point was I'm not basing it on games I haven't seen, I want to see a home game against an average side who I think will finish in the bottom half. If we struggle against them, I will be worried, regardless of Muller and Anderson coming back, especially as some people are suggesting Anderson may be unsettled in England. I hope that's not true, but if it is, it's a concern. Hopefully Colace will get his clearance soon.
We hit the post in the first half... And apparently Crewe had 2 shots all night - the 2 penalties. But if you lose, you lose.
