    We'd settle for this

    Blackpool 1-2 Barnsley 04-03-2003

A repeat of the scoreline from exactly 5 years ago there and a hat-trick of 2-1 wins against the Seasiders this season.

  5. 4 Mar 85 - what a night at The Dell!!

A previously postponed FA Cup 5th Round match, away to top flight Southampton. We were given no chance being an average Second Division side and a 6th round tie at home to Liverpool to play for . It would be a formality for Saints, so much so that John Peel (alledgedly) arranged a DJ gig on the south coast for the following weekend so that he could see his team play Southampton. It all went wrong though....
This was my "local" match as I was living near Salisbury at the time so there was no way that I was going to miss it. It was just after the miners' strike ended and a lot came down from Barnsley. It was a hell of a cup tie, end to end stuff as I remember, and they had two good strikers in Joe Jordan and Steve Moran. They didn't get much change out of Paul Futcher though - was it Larry May playing alongside him? (I forget). I think we went 1-0 down but turned it round to win 2-1. It was almost as big a shock as our win at Anfield the other week and was certainly just as emotional for those that were there. I wrote in to local news programme BBC South Today and got my letter read out in a "comedy Northern accent" by the smug southern presenter. He at least had the decency to wish Barnsley luck though for the following Sunday against Liverpool.
That's where the good luck ended though. In front of the live tv cameras we got hammered by a "proper" Liverpool team 4-0 and that was the end of that. Great memories of The Dell though.
