According to the census the Barnsley Borough population is well over 200,000. But this includes all the satalite, former industrial villages. Places like Goldthorpe I think are classified as Barnsley Borough. Yet they are so are far away some people from those areas never ever go to Barnsley, they have an afinity to Rotherham or Doncaster. People from such areas wouldn't neccessarily see Barnsley FC as their local team.

    rubbish

The population density of Barnsley borough is equivalent to that of sheffield, doncaster, leeds. i.e. there's as many places in those that are as far away from their respective centres as pensitone is from Barnsley.

yeh but they see Sheffield as their parent city. They go there to shop and socalise etc. People in Goldthorpe often don't see Barnsley in that way.

    Agreed.

There are some high density areas that are Barnsley only in name. It doesn't work the same way with Sheffield.

    True

People in Penistone say they are from Sheffield.

People from Goldthorpe say they are from the Dearne.

There's Sheffield & Donny postcodes in Barnsley.

There's Donny and Rotherham Phone Area codes in Barnsley.

    This doesn't happen in Sheffield

    I agree, Conkotyke ....

..... I live in Wombwell ( a town in it's own right), born in Sheffield (Jessops Hospital), never thought of myself as being from Barnsley and it's not much further to travel into Rotherham.
