I see he played for the under 23s today. Not started for first team for a while, has he been injured or out of favour? One thing I could never fathom with Hecky, is how he could say Mallan wasn't ready yet he more or less built his team around Potts, right from the off. Now I think Potts had some decent games and scored the odd goal, but wouldn't say he deserved his place more than any of the other lads. For quite a few of those early games he looked like he was running in treacle. One was allowed to get up to speed by playing games, the other wasn't.
Apart from swinging the odd decent free kick and corner in, I’m not sure we’ve seen anything to suggest that Mallan is ready either. Too early to write him off but not convinced he’d add anything to a relegation battle.
Good point, I thought he and isgrove made the difference when they came on against Wednesday, and also both scored against Burton. Lots of games he's started when we've lost as well.
I'm not saying he is ready. I'm just wondering how hecky came to the conclusion that one was and the other wasn't, when Potts looked so off the pace at the beginning of the season.
Wasn't suggesting he was the sole reason. I do think he has taken a lot more stick than he deserves though.
I watched him today for the U23s. He was poor in that, and so was Mallan. I think Mallan looks a decent enough player with potential but I’m yet to see why the majority think he should be in the team.
Potts was selected purely because of his height, when we had a goal kick he pushed up to the front to challenge for headers due to us playing tiny tap in Tom up front on his own, mcgheehan was coming back from injury and the other no 10s were too small or not good enough in the air. Tactical genius was hecky.
Watched a fair bit of the under 23s today and Potts was playing mostly central. Whilst not saying he was outstanding I thought he was better than both Mallan and ( unfortunately) Knasmüllner. He had far more touches and was more effective. Mallan really disappointing, gave away the ball virtually every time he had it. Knasmullner was knocked off the ball too easily.
I always felt Potts got the nod over others because he had far more first team starts on his CV than the rest of em. Whatever the reason, I liked Potts and thought he had a bit of versatility to his game, for example, made some good runs into the box (which his team-mates seemed oblivious to). Sadly, I'd be surprised if we see much more of him this season.
Nobody impressed this afternoon. It was a shockingly dispiriting performance. Knasmullner will not be the saviour, and Thiam looked terrible. His lack of pace at that level was woeful. Heckingbottom would not have turned this one around, and nor will anyone coming in. The game against Burton will be played in a quiet atmosphere and I no longer fancy us to win that one. We are set for another season in the alehouse league, and unless there is a clearout it will not be just one season either.
If your current predictions and assessments are of the same accuracy as previous ones (derogatory comments over the lack of quality in the likes of Watkins, Winnall & Hourihane for example), then Knasmullner will be a great success, Oakwell will be bouncing next Tuesday night after our victory and we'll comfortably finish clear of relegation.
