but the standard of trialist we are looking at is a worry. What happened to quality over quantity?

I had always thought that the idea of playing pre-season games against "inferior" opposition, was to develop a winning mentality. If this is not the case, then why bother with them. We might just as well pick two sides from our own players and develop the match fitness and systems that way.

    they're about winning?

I don't think there's a league manager out there who gives a toss whether they win pre-season friendlies.

    I think you're wrong.

If you talk about a team growing in confidence and getting used to winning ways, and they fall at the first hurdle by being unable to beat inferior opposition, and worse still, going 90 minutes and not being able to score against them will be a big worry.

I find it quite funny actually

When we are losing pre season friendlies they are all about fitness and results don't matter, when we are winning them then the results show what a good team we have and are building confidence.

    Listen here...

The idea of a 'friendly' is just that. The players go out to prove their fitness, to get sharp and get prepared for the coming season. They don't go out their with a gung-ho mentality, winning means nothing in a friendly. The idea is to get a good run out, and try to stay fit - not getting injured.

A good pre-season would mean that the team is healthy, fully fit and gelling together come August 9th. That is all.

Early ones are about fitness and looking at players/systems.

The later ones should be about getting the players used to the system we are going to use with less chopping and changing.

Results should be irrelevant to the players/manager, although its only natural if the players feel down, and lose confidence if we get tonked by a non-league side. We didn't get hammered last night, we had most of the ball, but the defence did look shaky, especially week against through balls played in between the centre halves/full backs. That does need looking at.

Just basing my comments on quotes from simon davey in early July last season

We came from a goal behind and managed to get a winner after we had been pegged back, which was encouraging to see.

It was nice to get a win under our belts
