£20 for season. Less than a quid a game. Personally think it should be free membership, but I still might give it a shot. Even if I don't use it, it's another few quid to the Club. Anyone else use it?
Been a member for the last one and a half seasons. Originally it was because you could get a nice pint of hand pulled Barnsley Bitter for just over £2 if I recall. This last season they have only had bottles of bitter AND put the price up to £3odd. To compound matters, they have been doing hand pulled bitter in the East Stand upper bar this season just ended - the whole reason we started going to Preedy's! Will probably join again though - nicer place to wait for my Dad & brother to turn up than the East Stand concourse. Maurice - if you reading this, the whole of the ground should be more like Preedy's and less like a half finished building site that is the East stand concourse.
I agree with this, I've brought many people to Oakwell, mainly on open days but I've managed to convince a few to come to the odd match with me too, and I've been really embarrased when leading them into the East Stand. It truelly does look like a building site with the horrible grey bare concrete.
wonder if we'll get a new sign on the ESU stairwell? the existing one has had better days I think (currently about 10 layers of paint covering various sponsors)
What it needs is someone to have a look around the stadium and look at what needs doing. I mean, the Ponty End concourse is as cold and depressing. There are just little jobs which need doing which can't be to expensive to remedy, just to get Oakwell back looking like the championship stadium that it is. The big red support beams which arch over the west stand for example; it's that long since they were last painted that they're starting to look pink.
I was with my Bro in law at Barnsley Palace in December, the season when Warnock had just taken over. We were standing in the ESL concourse drinking over priced beer. The setting was like a prison camp as people huddled together in a grey dreary concrete building site. We both commented that this is a place of entertainment which has vast potential on a match day if it is done right. I'm not expecting luxury but I'm sure I could design far better and I'm an accountant not a designer.
what does everyone actually expect from a concourse, carpets and chairs lol. They all look the same to me, been to wembley a few times and was there on Wednesday night and although large and spacious the concourse there isn't exactly some where i would choose to stay and drink before the game. The concourse at old Trafford are tiny and dull Its not the concourse that need doing up it a new large social area that is needed where fans cans meet up before and after the game, like the one at notts county.
why not street art/murals.... surely there are decent street artists that would love to hone their skills in the east stand concourse. As long as they football themed it of course. Just a thought.
Re: why not street art/murals.... BFC could commission our very own Mr C to do a large murals for the different concourses.
Me personally I don't expect us to still have up Admiral and iSoft signs when we've not had those sponsors for years. I thought it was lazy to paint over their logos which are still visible rather than just taking them down. The bog posters were still advertising the WWE November tour of last year, this March. The TVs down there must be 20 years old and rarely have the on pitch action shown or SSN like it used to. So some of the things i'd have done...... 1) Replace the old iSoft/Admiral signs with upto date ones of Nike/CK Beckett. 2) Get in touch with a well known bookie that offer proper odds so replacing the little known bookies we have with the poor odds. 3) Replace the TVs that are up with more modern ones that will have SSN on before the game, at half time and at full time. Showing the on pitch action when the match is actually on for those having a beer. 4) Cover the brick walls with art work. I'm sure Mr C could do something and we could get in touch with every school in Barnsley so schoolchildren of all ages can draw/paint tarn related pictures to frame and cover up the bricks. As long as they are decent enough obviously.
I have no idea what FISTA is mate but some of the graffiti art around the world is very very good. I reckon if its done by a really good artist/s then it could really dress the place up.
Re: I have no idea what FISTA is mate I agree that some grafitti can be brilliant, but I wasn't even meaning that. Can they not paint it red and white or summat? Anything but grey concrete!
I have to agree... jammers a coat of paint would work wonders, the club crests over the years too. Mebbe some caricatures of Oakwell legends , owt. Miners kes owt, would be better than bare concrete
